Sorry, was being a bit cranky there. I guess it can't hurt to take things apart, clean them, and then pin / weld. I would also argue that pinning eliminates catastrophic failure.
The reason I pinned was that, although welding works, it is possible that the welds could be porous, or there could be a problem with the thinness of the metal and burning through - at least this was my rationalization. That said, many people have successfully welded...
Bottom line, glad the car got fixed!
