New exhaust for 996 Mk1 GT3
I have been considering exhaust upgrade to my 996 Mk1 GT3 CS. I have searched pretty much everything, but have not found a definite answer, especially a comparison of different kinds of systems. So let's try as a new topic.
My objectives:
1. Performance gains. It seems Mk1 can see great gains by making exhaust side breathe better, especially when combined with a DME tune.
2. Louder, more cup -like sound (but not crazy beyond point at which you can't use at track nor drive without earplugs)
I have identified the following options, ordered by increasing cost, and each being notably different. Any input on comparing these much appreciated. Also, throw in other options if feel relevant. I have no reference to anything than stock exhaust myself.
#1 Muffler bypass pipes / removal of side cans. This is simplest and cheapest. It removes a lot of weight as well. However, some say it sounds too loud or just plain wrong.
Others say it might in fact drop hp.
#2 X-pipe exhaust with integrated small mufflers and cats, no side cans. For example FVD "Cup" muffler. It is lightweight and FVD promises up to 35hp more. I have not found any commentary on this. This is very interesting though.
#3 Cargraphic Motorsport system. This has been well documented. Also, the most expensive.
Lastly, would upgraded headers add any real benefit to options 2 or 3 or are stock headers good enough? For example in that article discussing Cargraphic exhaust and tune, stock headers were used, yet they managed to get +400hp.
Thanks in advance!

I think the consensus is the 997 headers and pipes are an excellent choice.
That may not be much louder, but it might meet the course power requirement. You may need to consider the 997 intake parts, too. Don't know about the MK 1.

We produce a catted X-Pipe with small in-line mufflers for the 996 GT3.

OP there may be an option 1.5: X-pipe with or w/o cats. Givens more sound and supposedly a small increase in high end HP. This is also fairly cheap depending on brand.
I think a full setup with properly tuned headers is the route (option3) for max performance and weight loss with quality sound. Option 1.5 or 2 give you sound but not much power (appears mk1 is different than mk2) relative to 3. The 997 option is a great option 3 but I don't want the visual changes to the rear so I landed on the Dundon setup as my preferred choice. expensive so haven't pulled the trigger yet..
Andy (Audion19s ) has a custom setup that looks interesting.. might be worth it if mk1 setups are hard to find.
Hope that helps

I ran a custom built setup like the FVD cup muffler you linked in #2 (Mine was without cats though) for almost 5 years with the stock headers and was very pleased with the performance and sound from that system. I still have a similar setup only coupled with long tube headers now but I don't regret the 5 years I spend on OEM headers the car was still plenty quick.

None of the exhausts on your list will gain up to 35 hp...that would be a miracle on a M96/76 engine.
The Cargraphic DMSB solution will bring up to 15hp with ECU maybe some more. The Cargraphic R-Sport system will gain even more. All will be dependend on your engine version/build year.
R-Sport with some proper mapping will gain about 30/35 hp.
Late 2000 engine versions will may have up to 400 hp with AlphaN, 100cel Cats, Cup-Filter, Temp-Sensor, 100 Octane, etc.
Be very carefull in comparing with M96/79 engine solutions....Only the exhaust will not gain any significant increase on that engine...

THE best exhausts for a Mk1 996 GT3, and with a decent remap, 400 hp is doable. It transforms the engine/car/driving experience.

I have a complete, used Fabspeed exhaust system for sale (Headers, Catbypass X-Pipe, and Maxflo Mufflers) in great shape if you'd be interested : ) Here's a video of the setup, about 2min in is the better quality sound recording.

My car has the Cargraphic Full R-Exhaust. I don't know about actual performance, but I talked with the shop that put in the exhaust and did the EVOMSit tune for a prior owner.
And I called EVOMsit and talked to them too about their tune and performance gains. They said the exhaust/tune together add about 35 hp.
The car is my first GT3 so I don't have a reference point, but it feels and sounds pretty good to me.

I do not know the decibel level. Others have told me that the car sounds very good going down the straight! I would note that, for my ears, the exhaust is a little resonant at 2500 RPM or so.

@Rootwitch Thank you so much for your feedback. Now I have to figure out which one of the "newer" systems is closest to this one I think it might be the second one I posted, since it still has TÜV, and the Super sound Version hasn't.
From your videos it seems like drive around without getting too much attention should be possible, unlike for instance with the dundon exhaust or muffler delete.
A little drone at 2'500 rpm probably isn't the end of the world.. I already have a Nitron R3 suspension with RSS engine mounts, harder gearbox mounts and buckets. My girlfriend loves the car, not

Yes, from what I've heard, Dundon, Fabspeed, and cup exhausts are louder.. Mine is fine for driving around town, not that loud unless you get into the throttle and higher RPM's.
Then, you can't miss it and I'm careful not to do that when women and small children are present,
