I am posting this question here because all the gear heads are here. On a 997 turbo engine which is same Medzger design as a GT3, there are two part numbers for chain tensioners, one left and one right. I am guessing that one has a design that allows it to be installed upside down and not leak all the oil out.

How can you tell which one is which when you removed them from the car?

Nobody has an idea? How does one tell if one has the right tensioner on the correct side, or not?

Absent any factory documentation on how to tell the two tensioners apart and my factory service manual has nothing on this -- there's only the part number.

The passenger side and driver side tensioners have different part numbers.

And I am not sure if the proper part numbers are scribed on that little $300 part.....

To which "$300 part" are you referring? The chain tensioner parts in the diagram list for over $500.

If you have the existing parts exposed and if there is a part # visible enter the part # into a google search and see what turns up.

You can get those tensioner for $325 or somewhere around there from a well know Porsche dealer in Oregon

the part numbers are marked on the ends of the tensioners.... so if you take it out, you will be able to tell.
