Default Car Selling Tips

I am selling my 2003 S2000 Honda to make room for a GT3 later this Winter.

My question is this, when you sell a car privately(California), what is the sellers protocol.

My knowledge extends to getting a cashiers check, getting ID, and handing over the keys.

Is it that simple?

Do I need to verify the cashiers check, and do I need to do anything with the DMV. Should I make up some form of sales contract?

Note: The title is held by Honda pending payoff.

Thanks

You can get a form from the DMV to fill out and return to them so you won't be billed for parking tickets and the like. I've always just deposited the cashier's check with no problem, but it wouldn't hurt to call the issuing bank to verify. You will have to get the car smogged and give the paperwork to the buyer. I usually write up a bill of sale on the computer for both parties to sign with all the agreed particulars clearly spelled out, including a statement that the car is sold "as is" with no warranty.

petert: I see from your signature that you have a gt3 and 996tt. I have been struggling with the decision to trade my '02 tt w/x50 for a '04 gts. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated. Rob

Definitely DO NOT FORGET the release of liability form! That will save major headaches in the future.
