Default Has anyone replaced this trim piece around the steering column?

This soft touch piece is peeling on my car. Has anyone here replaced it? If so can someone tell me what is involved in getting it off? Do I need to pull the airbag, steering wheel, and column trim? Or can it come off around the column trim? It appears to be foam/flexible.

I've done it several times. Airbag & steering wheel stay on.

Remove the hazard light unit, then unscrew the instrument cluster from the dash & lift the cluster up. To give you enough space to fit the column trim, you may want to remove the electrical inputs to the cluster & set it aside. To install the column trim you'll need to use its flexibility to get around the column. It has two screws to keep it steady once properly fitted.

Pelican either has a to-do that covers this or you can use the one for instrument cluster removal to get there. GL, it's not a bad DIY.

Thanks that's great info. I've had my instrument cluster out before so I know how to do that. Good news that it's that easy to get off without removing the steering wheel. I guess I'll be ordering a new one now!

FWIW the part number is 996-552-271-03 + your color code (in my case C53 for graphite grey)

Have you found this part somewhere? I see it as being discontinued in graphite grey.

I ordered one from Pelican yesterday, it's listed on their site. We'll see if they call me saying it's NLA. At least if only black were still available it would look OK.

Interesting! They actually dyed your soft touch plastic pieces?

Here's how I am dealing with most of them, but not all: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...h-aaaaahh.html

FWIW the post above is correct. This part is NLA from Porsche in all colors except for Black. So I ordered one in black. Since my steering column trim is black from the factory I think it will look fine.

Yes they did and it looks great. You can't tell the parts they dyed from the parts they didn't. In fact they dyed a black center console graphite grey and it looks great. Much cheaper than replacing parts.

I put a black one on as well, looks fine against the grey interior.

Does it work if the soft touch surface is actually peeling away (as it usually does)? I would think you'd have to just have an intact and faded soft touch surface?

Quick Reply: Has anyone replaced this trim piece around the steering column?
