Default Should I just part out my 2002?

Okay, I'd like to sell my higher mileage 2002 c2 tiptronic so I can purchase a 991. 122,000 miles on it. The car runs great. Everything works. With the high mileage I can't even seem to get $16,000 out of it. So the question is.... should I just part this thing out and see what happens? I don't mind doing the work (I even think it's "fun") and I don't mind the hassle of selling things. I did some quick math (below) and it seems I could reach $14,000 fairly quickly with lots of little parts still left.

I know this is crazy but it just seems like the parts are worth more than the whole.

Engine - 6,000
Transmission - 1,800
Wheels (perfect) & tires (brand new) - 1,200
Hood (perfect) 500
Headlights (excellent) 800
Taillights 300
Coilovers (one year old, less than 2,000 miles) 1000
Sway bars (same as above) 300
Seats (like new 997 seats that are PLUG AND PLAY with 996) that is almost impossible to find 1,500
Steering wheel with air bag - 300
Front bumper (nice) 300
Rear bumper (nice) 250

I think that list alone is near $14,000 with lots of little parts left. What say you ? Let me have it!

How about taking into account somebody's time to do all of that work? Storage, time taken to sell everything, tools, disposal etc.?

I think you would regret trying to part it out. Way too much hassle. And even if you reach $14k in sales, how much will you have to pay to get rid of the stuff you don't sell?

I was in a similar situation. I thought it would be interesting to rebuild the engine and 6 speed. It was. But it was eye-wateringly expensive and difficult and I have lots of tools.equipment.facilities and allegedly the education/experience. Little did I know ! The first mistake was the budget. The second was not attending Jake's class- I missed the last West Coast class.
If I was in the same situation I would just sell at market price (check EBay "Completed Listings -Sold for a reality check!) and start with a better car. A big upfront $$$$$ hit but time, aggro and a marriage saved ?
Having said that I have a rather pathetic affinity for the car now it is done .I say pathetic because it is a total disaster in time and money terms ! Rather like the lady above?

Parting out the car means you spend the next X years while strangers get to come to your house and your garage and pick over the bones of the car. (Chances in pulling something out of the car they'll damage something that's worth more than the item they are buying. And God help you if one drops something on his foot, or hurts his back on your property.)

IOWs, if you don't own a junk yard leave this parting out to the professionals.

Maybe the car as it is isn't worth $16K?

Let me consult NADA. Well, NADA seems to have a pretty high opinion of the car. Rough trade-in is $14,725. Average trade-in is $17,250. Clean retail is $23,050.

Think about how you presented the car in your ad. Is servicing up to date? NADA thinks the 122K miles are low and adds a $1250 premium. Stress the "low" miles. And NADA adds $400 for the Tip.

Wonder what KBB has to "say"...

Ok, KBB values the car in "good condition" for a private party sale at $12,893. This is closer to what I expected the car's value to be.

I think you are better off selling the car as a runner even if you have to take less than the $16K you tried for rather than parting the car out.

Have you explored what you could get for the car as a trade-in towards the 991 you want?

Parting it out will be a hassle and I don't see how you could get that much more than 14k. Really, the engine is the key component. If you do decide you want to part it out, go for a solid price on the engine first. If you can find someone who will pay 7500 or 8k for the 3.6 that whey can hear running and even drive the car, it would be a lot easier to get your money out at that point. Personally, I would avoid the hassle and the risk of having to sell stuff cheaper than you anticipate. You would get the best prices selling the smaller items, such as the transmission, on line. If you use eBay, you will pay approximately 10% sellers fee and another 3% to PayPal. The buyer will also figure in shipping which could be around $150 for the transmission. When the dust settles, you are getting about $1450 in your pocket for that $1800 transmission.

If you part out it will take you a few weeks to sell off all the expensive/nice/desirable stuff. Then it will take you years to sell the small stuff. If you could reach $16K with the big/desirable stuff then do it...as soon as you hit your number drag the rest to the dump and eat the disposal fee.

Put it on BaT and let the market determine what it's worth.

Maybe I will give Bring a Trailer a shot. BAT does seem to squeeze a fair price out of most cars. For now I will let the idea of parting it out take a walk, but still .. I will always wonder how much i could have squeezed out of it.
