Default New Tire suggestions

I think I have my search narrowed down to Michelin Pilot Super Sport and Continental Extreme Contact Sport. The Michelins look to be about $100 but I've heard so many great things that on their face seem to make them much better and easily worth the extra money.

Plans for my 996 include 6 or so AX days, 2-3 track days, and about 2000-3000mi per year on the road. No winter driving, very rare wet-weather driving.

What say you? Opinions on one over the other before I order?

Neither if you are tracking your car
They are street tires, not track tires and in AX not so great.
I have known people that get chunking of the tread when used for AX or track on the PSS
don't know about the Conti's

Otherwise PSS is a great Street tire

If you want to be competitive get RE-71's. Depending on the AX and track surfaces, you may get 1 year out of a set

I've used my PSS for several lapping days, wear very even and no chunking going on whatsoever. Nothing like the V12's.

PSS are definitely not track tires
Star Spec's are another good option

I've had no issues with using my PSS at the track. Most of the guys I go lapping with are running these tires and love them at the track. Its a great tire to arrive and drive (and leave) with.

I do about 3 or 4 lapping events a year with my car, have been running pss for the last 5 years or so. It will be a great tire if you're doing just 2 or 3 a year.

They don't take heat well. PSS is not a track tire, not sticky, lower performance on the track

You must not be pushing the car very hard

I have PSS, but they are on my DD wheels.
If yo want to drive to the track on the same tires you do your sessions on, RE-71, Star Spec, R-S4 are the way to go.

@JayG which sizes of PSS are you using? I'm planning on trying those out after I wear down my AD08Rs.

Damon @ Tire Rack suggested said AD08Rs to replace the PZeros and I've had great luck with them so far (8k miles). Figure I won't know whether I like anything else unless I try though!

Sometimes you need to exceed your limits to find them !
If you are not getting a 6-8 PSI increase from cold to hot you ain't pushing the car

I run PSS on my Boxster, so they are 268/35-18 and 224/40-18

For street tires, they are great. I also really like Sumitomo HTR ZIII which are around 50% the price of the PSS. I got the PSS because they were free to me, otherwise I would have gone with another set of the Sumi's

If your tracking, get a 2nd set of wheel and put on RE-71, Star spec, or maybe R-S4's. Street tires just won't hold up or have the grip. You can drive to and from the track on any of those as well

I just got some HTR ZIII's mounted on my 18" wheels and should have them on the car this weekend. I won't lie, the price was a big reason in going with them, so I hope they're decent!

I like the idea of getting some dedicated AX rubber on my 17" wheels, but we'll see if it actually happens.

I have Star Specs on my 996. Lots of tread left, but they have gotten incredibly noisy over time.
