Default rear tire wear

Put a new set of rear tires on my 2000 cabrio right before I winterized her in November. The old tires had extreme wear on both inside edges with cord showing. I take that as needing a rear alignment/adjustment but can any basic Les Schawb type place do that or do I need to go elsewhere

That is normal wear for a 911. How old were the tires you took off?

Regular (tire off of rim) rotations will get you more mileage out of them.

I would definitely get alignment checked - my tires wear at rear in 8-10k - but inside edge is not bad compared to rest of tire ....

any shop with hunter alignment rig should be able to do - but better if tech has Porsche experience - ask your local pca for recommendations ....

My first set after getting my car did the same. I had it aligned at a local tire shop (nothing to fancy) and had then do the mildest alignment spec. Been MUCH better through the next two sets of rears. If you are tracking, or want max performance more camber is necessary, but I don't have the need for a street car and tire wear is much more even.

Yes a standard alignment shop should be fine. Sounds like the previous owner may have had extra negative Camber to help out at the track.

Mine do same (997.1 C2) but in the 8 years and about 40k miles of owning my car I've only gone through 2 sets of rears - first PS2's and latest RE11's. That's pretty damn impressive for a car like this, so I am not going to mess with my alignment.

Ditto.. I just placed some new rubber shoes on the 996 all around and the wear on the rears is normal. Seems as the ride camber is set that way on our cars. I did do what 808bill recommended that every so many miles I would get all four of the tires dismounted off the rim rotated and rebalanced to get more mileage out of them and somewhat even out the wear.

You can really help rear tire life by taking some of the rear toe out, but be careful since this will make it handle more like a 911. For autox I like very little rear toe, if you're spinning the inside rear too hard and tearing up your tires put a little rear toe back into it until you find a happy medium you can live with. An LSD would help, but that buys an awful lot of tire sets.

Can't have ideal autox AND stabil high-speed manners at the same time- at least for how I like mine setup. A normal-person summer tire like a 340TW htrz3 I can get 10k street miles and a few autox seasons out of. An autox tire like an rs3 I can get a full season with a couple thousand street miles mixed in, if I'm lucky.
