Ouch!
Pick up the phone and start calling for quotes. I know it seems archaic but find a phone book and call a few local independent agents. Then call all the big name national carriers.
Is it $2800 just for the 996 or that account billing all your vehs?
Also, ask them to suspend liability, remove collision coverage and leave comprehensive. Comprehensive will keep you covered if the car is stolen, burns, or vandalized during your downtime.

I once backed into a car in my truck while backing out of driveway (it was just parked in street at curb), my insurance broker told me to say that I did not set the brake and it rolled back into the other car so that my homeowners insurance would pic it up without jacking up my auto premium.

Check your homeowners insurance, mine will cover the stolen, burns, or vandalized as long as it was on my property if this happens. Then you may not need any insurance on the car while it sits in the garage.

It really bothers me when people pull this kind of crap...

Really!!, like I said, I contacted my insurance and it was my agent that made the recommendation to use my home insurance policy. The insurance paid "no dishonesty or crap on my part"

Now if you continued to file the claim through the car insurance, then yes you did the correct thing (though you really should have reported the agent for encouraging insurance fraud).

Nothing like a good ole felony for what is ultimately a lifetime rounding error.

Umm, if you told your home owner's agent that the accident happened in a manner than what actually happened and filed the claim through them, then that is insurance fraud and very bad.
