OK, I've now blown out two clutch slave cylinders tonight. What is it that I'm missing or doing wrong!?!?!

I did the same thing like 3 times. it's all about alignment. getting the slave rod into the pocket of the arm. I don't have any tips other than if it's a new slave, just lube it up with brake lube and carefully reassemble. a used one may be damaged because of a possible step that may have been worn in

So am I just trying to feel for it seating into something when I'm reinstalling it or do I need to drop the transmission? When you say lube it are you talking about pulling off the rubber boot of the slave and greasing those parts?

it does sound like the slaves push rod is not in contact of the thrown-out bearing arm. Or there is a problem inside the bellhousing ,i would look inside the hole where the slave mounts as best i could and even try a screw driver touching the arm [check for first contact depth] .i have seen arms break,contact point worn into a hole bigger than the pushrod ,collapsed throw-out bearing ,pivot broken ,even once saw a transmission separating from the block caused by loose bolts etc. what is the history here,why a new slave

Just got the transmission serviced and a new LSD installed.

was the transmission removed for any of this ?

It sounds like the release arm is not seated on the pivot pin .Did you feel the slave compressing against the throw out arm as you were installing ? It takes a little muscle to install the slave -if there was no resistance -somethings amuck with the throwout arm .As far as lubing the slave -just brake fluid .Bleeding the slave is also tricky -Very important to follow the shop manual steps -especially the amount of time to for the open bleeding .

No resistance when installing. That sounds like the culprit.

There really should be a limit to the amount of stupidity one is willing to admit to on the internet. I'm not sure I know what the limit is though. This is how I had the transmission installed.....

did you omit the fork and bearing ? clean up all the inner surfaces using brake fluid and re-assemble the slave it will last a long time. did you really leave out the fork n bearing ? don,t feel bad i have done worse........but they didn't have cell-phones back then so i now deny everything

It is an odd system fiddly clip ,seems all floppy until it mates up and then it seems so clever ! Don't forget the dab of grease on the ball/ pivot.
