Squeal noise starting off in first gear
Have a 2000 C2 with 21K miles. Took advantage of the nice weather and took the baby out for a nice drive. I noticed a strange squeal happening on taking off from a dead stop in 1st. Squeal is short in duration, any idea what it might be. Belt?

Normally, a "squeal" on 1st is a good thing at least we get a excited about it in the south. But when it doesn't come from the tires, then I would definitely be concerned. I vote your serpentine belt is slipping, but diagnosing a sound sometimes can lead you in many directions. But first things first, examine the belt for wear. Replacing it is relatively cheap and can be installed pretty quick.

No not tire squeal, Lol. Thanks for the input, not worried just curious the possibilities. Serpentine has been replace a year ago, my guess is it is that. Is it tough to tighten?

You don't mention whether it's a MT or Tiptronic transaxle... Does the squeal happen in neutral when reving the engine? If not, it's probably not the belt. The fact that you mention "1st gear", leads me to believe it's a MT and the squeal could be coming from the clutch or the bearing...neither of which are particularly good... Whatever it is, I hope it's a relatively inexpensive fix

do you hear banjos too ? the belt is kept in proper tension by a tension er so no adjustment. The noise could be many things......throw out bearing, aos is known to squeal/whistle ,belt slipping ....get a mechanics ear on it

As extanker mentioned, there is no tightening of the serpentine belt. The M96 has a idler and tensioner... the tensioner pulls belt to proper tightness. For more reference, watch Van Svenson's youtube video on the replacing the belt.

Could be the throw out bearing being an MT. During take up on 1st, there is pressure for a longer period of time on the throw out bearing. Mine does it at times.

Most likely clutch related. I had that split second squeal when taking off more aggressively. The squeal is gone after I replaced the flywheel, clutch and the two bearings due to other failures unrelated to the noise ( lack of lubrication that caused the throwout bearing to fail).

Drove the car today. The noise was pretty much absent except for just a few time. Not sure what I did differently when it happened. Surprisingly the times it did happen the car was up to temperature and I wasn't trying to accelerate aggressively. I need to recheck the records but the clutch was replaced when the IMS bearing was done about 5K miles ago.

Mine me would also do the same. A squeal when trying to take off from a stop aggressively. I spoke to an Indy and he believes it's the throw out bearing. He wasn't worried.

Have to ask: With just 21K miles on the car how old are the tires? And this prompts another question? With just 16K miles why was a new clutch needed?

It was throw-out bearing for me and it happened in colder seasons. In the summer, it was non-existent. Several shops in town mentioned it wasn't an issue, like ChicagoSpeed996.
