Default Trouble getting shift linkage onto gear shift ball end

Hey all. One of my shift cables broke at the transmission side.

I ordered a replacement part that is very close to being installed, except that this new 996 cable has a different ball end and I can't get it to snap onto the gear selector ball end. Any advice appreciated!

Here is a photo of the 2 old ball ends (blue/black) and here is the new cable ready to be installed.

The original set (blue/black) seem to be much deeper and snap on the gear selector ball end with no problems. But these new cables are porsche oem, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Short of anything elegant...have you tried putting some silicone grease on the ball end and tap it on with a rubber mallet? I think it is going to "pop" on with some light force.

It looks like it's on in the photo above^^??? Or is it supposed to be all the way against the left side?

I've used a lot of force and it was a no go.

The ones that were on originally just snap right on and I use 2 flat heads to get them off.

I believe I used a bit of grease and a rubber mallet. Are you sure you ordered the correct part? I am not sure if they're different for 996 variants (C2 vs C4) but I'd double check that before you spend too much time on it.

There are two different cables and part numbers depending on year:
99642404109 for up to year 00
99642404114 for 01 and up
Didn't see any variation for model C2 vs C4, but there could be.
Where did you order your cable and did they ask what year?

Like a dumb *** I ordered the wrong part. It was through ebay for 75, and it just said 996 manual shifter cables like new.

Anyways, I took the original cable ends and a photo of the new ones to an Indy, and they immediately got me the correct part number: 99642404109 like you say DB.

380 to pick it up from the P dealer tomorrow. Still better than paying to get the car towed and have it done, and at least now I'm going into this project with some confidance.

Total diyer over here, and my anxiety and frugalness has kept my 996 in the garage for over 3 months now lol. Thanks fellas.

So just sell the 'wrong' cables here ?
99642404114 for 01 and up
For future reference, RennList has a wonderful part number request service.
