To exhaust or not

Sure. I know there is some debate about this, but I consider the PSE hack to be opening the top muffler hole and adding a pipe between that hole and the outlet pipe, which sort of mimics the OE Porsche Sport Exhaust option. I consider Gundo to be the addition of a crossover pipe between the inlet and outlet pipes, aka Fister, and that's the track I'm on with my local shop come this Summer except without the Cermachrome finish.

I'm running Fabspeed headers and mufflers with a Speedtech catless X-pipe. I would not go back to stock if you paid me twice what was spent on these parts!
I absolutely love the sound of it and it REALLY woke up the car when I added the catless x-pipe.

Couple points on this video:
1. Car has factory sports exhaust (XLF)
2. This is SpeedTech's Catless X-pipe.
3. Second cold start of the year, coming out of winter storage, so I kept off the revs (no more than a 2500 rpm blip)
4. Car is loud AF above 5k in a tunnel
Speedtech was great to work with, and $1,000 CAD cheaper than Fabspeed for the same chunk of stainless. Fitment of that X-pipe was better than my Sharkwerks crossover pipe on my 997.2.

I run Afterhours Exhaust.... For weight savings primarily and yes it is loud... can get obnoxious in 3rd gear between 48 and 53 MPH... but I wouldn't change it back to stock ever. I love the noise. And will eventually add an X pipe to help the system become a little higher pitched. Right now it is very deep/throaty but would like a little more Exotic sound.
You can also run an X pipe on stock mufflers and may be able to achieve the sound you want.

I've heard a lot of good things about it as well, though I'd like to hear it in person and preferably from the inside of the car as well. I don't want to sound like some kid in a civic that put a fart can on the car, but like I said before the Fabspeed setup added a nice presence to the car, especially when going through tunnels or next to some walls
Not that I have the money at the moment, job hunting after quitting a decent paying but brutal on the conscience sales job, but I have been tossing around the idea of changing out my stock exhaust, at some point. My Boxster S had an awesome sounding Fabspeed system on it, and the burbles and pops when you let off the throttle were glorious. The howling at high revs was downright arrousing. But alas my 996 has a stock system, and I miss the burbles and pops and other sexy noises. Though the big, big, thing I like about the mostly quiet stock setup, when setting off from a stop with the windows down I hear nothing but a beautiful flat six mechanical symphony, it is raw and simple, and I do love it. Though most of the rest of the time, unless I'm at WOT and about four grand, it's just really quite quiet. I guess my question is, have you done an aftermarket exhaust and how do you feel about it, do you miss the stock setup, or do you have it stock and wish it weren't?
Here are some videos of that setup on a good friend of mine's 996
And then we gundo hacked the maxflos for the track...didn't think it could get any better but I might have been wrong haha.

And this is Gundo (aka Fister):
That's the info I have anyway. Would love to hear views to the contrary - I'm fairly new to the 996 game.

Your first pic is the gundo, your second is the fister, they are not the same, contrary to WHAT you believe or have found on the Internet

PSE is the legit version from Porsche that costs a bunch and weighs a bunch.
Gundo developed the hack version that simulates PSE. Incidentally, Gundo later installed different aftermarket cans on his 911.
Fister is the guy who sells the Fister mod. He does nice work.

Here is one vote for Fabspeed. I've had these on for a long time, build quality is excellent, sound is awesome. I'll tell you what, I've run through the tunnel at the speedway and nothing comes close to sounding like them. I don't care about a power/HP debate, but the sound...ohhhh my goodness. So there, I don't think you would ever regret getting Fabspeed! For whatever it's worth...there ya go.

I had GUNDO's.... they are not satisfying, maybe increased 2-3 decibles... Don't waste the money going the gundo route... The only thing I could imagine making them sound OK is by adding a catless X pipe.

The Gundo hack is pretty much perfect on my cab with the top down but would probably be too quiet in a coupe for most people.
Fister sounds more aggressive and is definitely louder but not too loud. Drone free and deliciously raspy. Sadly too loud for my wife in the cab. Had to choose between her and the exhaust so I guess we all now know who's whipped here....
