Bad final HPDE of the season
This past weekend was my last event of the season, at Summit Point. It all ended 12 minutes into the first session on Friday.
12 minutes in, I lost power and car started misfiring like crazy. I limped it offline in view of a flagger (trying to get far enough off course so they would not have to black flag).
They finished the session and sent the wrecker to come get me. Got pulled back into the paddock. Tried to start the car, it ran for 2 seconds (very poorly) and stalled. I pulled the codes. It showed an o2 sensor failure on the right bank, and misfires leading to cat damage on the left bank. Also showed an overrev of 214 that was not there when I first purchased the car. I did have a bad shift, but it was 2 laps before, and I am pretty sure I caught it, as the clutch was not all the way out.
Anyway, I pulled the filter (screw on), poured the oil into a cup and stuck a magnet in. What came back out was not good. Lots of sand sized particles. So, something let go. Not sure yet what it is.
I'm going to pull the pan tonight to see what I can see. Guessing I will either be doing a rebuild, or I'll buy a salvage car, pull the engine, and sell the rest of the parts to recoup some of the expense.
Silver Lining, it was the last event of the season, and now I have a project for the winter. Just wish it was the last run session on Sunday instead of the first on Friday.
Of course now, I am second guessing the new badge that was installed 2 days before the event. Perhaps I hurt the cars feelings.

Bummer man, that sucks. Hopefully it's something not to terribly bad. As many miles as it has on it and as much as it has seen the track, a good refresh/rebuild might be worthwhile anyway.
Yeap, so we know it was a good one with plenty of track under it's serpentine belt!
I'm going with the new badge as the cause
Ooh... Maybe a lawsuit against Gator is appropriate here. He obviously misrepresented this as a solid track car!

Well I guess it wasn't as good as car as we were led to believe. The OP should also sue everyone on rennlist that said this car was top notch.

Send it on... :-)

Dammit, not the Douche Canoe II! I thought self-deprecation was the key to M96 longevity.
Since they car will be out of commission for a while, maybe he could loan you the deck badging? At least the first word...

Sorry to hear that but it does sound like a fun winter project. And it does sound like a "money shift" caused it. Especially if it registered in the DME.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I am thinking this is my fault, of course I was tracking the car ALOT with 117K so something was bound to happen at some point. I was already planning on pulling the motor during the off season, and doing the clutch, IMS, AOS and all of the other stuff that needs doing.
Now I just need to decide if I am going to try to save this engine, or buy a salvage 996 and start with that engine as a base. I'm leaning that way since I already have a side business of parting out E36 M3s, so I am used to tearing apart cars and selling parts, and I'll be able to recoup some money.
And I think it is already widely known that this is Gators old car. Just wanted to say that he represented the car really well, and the PPI was good, and he has been a great seller always quick to answer questions after the sale. I know he did not misrepresent that car, and that he is a really good guy. Just wanted to throw that out there.
And here's a pic from an earlier event that did not end in tears (I had just passed the C7 BTW).

Failure can be an opportunity...... To start over, more intelligently.
Looking at it like this, makes it not seem quite so bad. Its only money, you'l make more! :-)
