I would say the 99 for the driving experience. C4s for the look. For some reason they look better than a turbo. I also like the x51 cars for their performce.

MK1 aero kit car or C4S (converted to RWD) would be my pick. I just like RWD P-cars

The C4S has the best butt in the 996 lineup, but if I wanted an AWD 996, I'd opt for a nicely used 996 Turbo.

However, I prefer the rear drive feel of the 996 C2. Heck, if you want the Turbo/C4S look... just update the bumper. I did... and love it. To each his own my friends!

Default TARGA HAS MY VOTE

As soon as I saw one in the Dealership with the Aero Kit, I fell in love and bought her 2 days later, almost 14 years later and she is still a beauty - But it is all RELATIVE my brothers

I'm biased to the turbo, but the mk1 with aero kit is my next choice.

99' c2 with Aero, biased too, bought what I wanted the most...well budget friendly (gt3 is my first choice). Turbo was in the running too if I wanted to stretch the budget, but I'm very happy with mine.

I think the Mk1 aero is going to eventually have kind of a cult following. Not because of any great performance, but because of the iconic nature of the car, and it's classic sporty looks, notwithstanding possible mundane relationship to the rest of the offerings.

The 996.1 headlights are more consistent with the overall lines of the car - fluid and lacking sharp corners like the MK2 headlights. No hiccups in the exterior flow. The only real downside I see is slightly less power, but in the end not a biggie.

Sorry, I'm pretty ignorant about 996's. Why is it such an obvious answer that 1999 models are the best?

Ignorant me would have assumed the last model year (2004) or at least last pre-face lift (2001) would be the best. What am I missing?

GT3 of course, but that's probably not what you meant. GT3's had the Mezger engine, along with the Turbo.

For 'regular' 996's, I personally like the later MkII (2002+) cars much more than the MkI cars. Blahblahblah singlerow IMS etc. fear mongering aside, the MkII's just have a significantly nicer interior and much nicer headlights IMHO. Some people like the early '99's for their mechanical throttle linkage, slightly different cam chains and IMS bearing style. Not me..

Something like a minty, $25K, 50K mile 2004 C2 manual is hard to beat for an comparatively inexpensive Porsche.

I no longer have this car, but it made a perfect inexpensive 911!

do you happen to know if the rear wing is fixed or if it raises with the sport body kit? I have only seen the pictures on suncoast. I think it looks pretty good
