Default 996 front brake discs and pads

I have and '02 C2 Carrera, used for street and touring. I am ready to change the front rotors and pads, and am looking for recommendations for durable, quiet, and the least amount of brake dust to install. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am a new owner.

I have always used OEM rotors and have been very pleased with them. OEM pads are also great for street use but they do create a lot of dust. The only other pads I have experience with are track pads, which you probably don't want, but just in case - Ferodo street/track have worked the best for me, with minimal fade on track and minimal dust and squeal on the street.

P.S. Welcome to the club! How about showing us some pics?

I use EBC red stuff pads for street. A little better bite than OEM and a lot less dust.

For rotors, the sebro slotted are pretty awesome for street or track.

If you want to save a few dollars, all of the Vipers we drove at Bondurant Race School had Power Stop pads and rotors. They performed surprisingly well. They are available on Amazon.

If its a DIY install, I watched this video in conjunction with the Pelican Parts photo tutorial to install mine.
There is also some debate on replacing the bolts that hold the calipers in place, I reused mine after cleaning and inspection, but used loctite blue as a replacement for the original thread locker.

Its pretty easy. I bought from Warehouse 33 who offer a 10% Rennlist discount.

Not sure if the video shows using a putty knife to separate the pad from the dampeners but the dampeners caught me off guard. FYI, you can remove them permanently if you want with no issues. Also, I've reused my caliper bolts many times without any problems.

EBC Red stuff is a great pad. It's a trackable street pad

A good low cost street pad is PowerStop ceramic on ebay They run around $35 a set. I have them as my DD pads on my Boxster S which has the same brakes as a C2. I have even used the PowerStop pads on the track and they worked pretty well.
In any case, low dust and no squeal

For rotors, you won't go wrong with Meyle. Around $75 a PAIR! On ebay

There is no need to spend big $$ on rotors or pads, especially for street use

For the street Meyle and Akebono are a good choice.

Besides the brands I have on the website

I also have Hawk, EBC and DBA rotors that aren't listed, message me if interested.

I have been very happy with the Cool Carbon Street Performance pads. Good bite and modulation with very low dust. Similar in dust level to the Akebono, but much better bite. In my opinion the Akebono's have very low bite.

The Cool Carbon pads stopped well, but on my Boxster they were unbearably loud. Perhaps on a 996 with the dampers installed they would be better...

I don't know if this is entirely accurate. The better description IMO is that the Akebono's have more of a linear bite that is different than most OEM pad characteristics which tend to have a more grabby instant cold bite nature. You should go with the pad that is more suited to your tastes. Track guys tend to prefer the more linear feel from my observations whether they are driving on the street or track.

+4 on the Akebonos. Very pleased with their modulation and zero dust and noise. Still on OEM rotors.

I see them for that price per rotor, so $150 a pair...

Regardless - Are you sure your rotors are worn past the service limits? In my experience with street use, the rotors will last for several sets of OEM pads... just sayin.

I just bought a front set of Hella-Pagid from a reputable E-bay seller for $122 shipped... lowest cost I've ever encountered, wearing like stock rotors, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Easy DIY... and enjoyable to wrench on a such a well engineered machine!

Good luck!
