Default update: steering wheel shimmy solved

update: just returned from the first spirited drive after the suspension replacement. A slight steering wheel shimmy that I used to experience is gone, thank god. The vibration in the steering wheel wasn't that bad, just a very slight shimmy in the wheel somewhere around 72mph. I tried balancing the wheels, etc, but nothing solved the problem. The suspension replacement solved the problem.

The most annoying part of the shake was it happened right around 72 mph, a fairly common highway speed in an area where the speed limit on most highways is 65mph. So I either had to drive 68 or slower or 76 or faster.

Anyway the point is a worn suspension could be the cause of a steering wheel shake. I'm not suggesting to replace your suspension if your wheel shakes. Once the far less costly solutions are exhausted your suspension may be the culprit.

I think you'll like your H&rs , I have a set of the sp and h& r swaybars , I love them ,
On my car the stock bushes were showing their age so I replaced every bush with powerflex poly bushes , that really brought it all together .

The H&R sp coilovers don't get much coverage on rennlist but the German made build quality and bang for the buck is excellent . The sps have bilstein dampers , the h&r rss coilovers use konis , so it's good gear . I find the ride quality firm but comfortable and not harsh even on Canadian roads . A good balance between street comfort and track capability .
I also like the adjustable ride height .ive got mine most of the way up which is about an inch drop

Nice thread. I'll be following in your footsteps soon with full shock and strut replacement, but still unsure of springs and sways. Probably bite the bullet and get it done, along with new bushes.

Curious about the seats, though. Did you have to use new rails or wiring for the 997 seats? Or did they fit into 996 rails/harnesses?

Physically 997 seats fit easily in 996, the rails are the same. The problem is making the electronics work. If you decide to try and fit 997 seats into a 996 I would highly advise going with manual 997 seats. They will still have an electric seat back, but the rest will be manual and that will reduce the difficulty factor in a major way. The seat wiring connectors are not the same, it's not plug and play. The 997 seats I had were full power. I found an indy tech who knew how to make it work but it's not easy and requires some special knowledge and tools.

Much easier to get those manual 997 seats into the 996.

Thanks! So if I want to keep the electrics, I'm better off restoring my 996 seats then.

Not exactly sure what a 'shimmy' is. My 996 is lowered on PSS10's and I think lowering it has induced a bit of bump steer. If you lowered your ride height when you installed your coil overs, aftermarket tie rod ends/bump steer kits may be what you need. Since you just changed a majority of your suspension components I would look at your alignment next to see if there are issues there.

Shimmy = vibration, shaking. Replacing the suspension components solved the problem. Maybe replacing the tie rod ends solved it. Hard to say since I replaced 5 parts on each of the front suspension set ups (shock, spring, control arms (2), tie rod end).

Apologies. I read that wrong. Glad to hear no more shimmy!
