Car died on interstate.....

For anything porsche has ever listed as being part of a "service" for the 996, not much time, and not much money. For anything where the engine has to come out, I'd take it to a professional, though.

If I really loved working on cars I would have become a mechanic. I prefer to drive my cars so I pay a mechanic. Just curious how much time the hard core DIYers spend working on their cars (and trying to figure out what is wrong) vs driving their cars? Anytime someone buys a used Porsche they should have upfront planned to spend at least $5000 in deferred but needed maintanece.

When I was a kid (and had a garage) I was a little motor-head, so I sort of enjoy mechanical stuff. This doesn't mean I enjoy getting greasy to driving my car though. I try to schedule the big stuff for the winter so I can put the car up on stands and get it done at my own pace. I'll do basic stuff like oil changes, checking coolant/fluids, brake flush/bleeds etc. during the spring, summer and fall, but it's mostly driving/enjoying... Unless something breaks of course...

It also gives you the opportunity to learn more about the previous owner. Pad wear sensors there but zip tied? Could have been an AX car. Pad wear sensors worn and then ghetto-fixed and zip tied up out of the way? PO was doing things on the cheap.
Even the best mechanic in the world isn't going to spend the time checking your car over that you will. Especially when it comes to driving events - or sending my wife and a niece or nephew out in the 996 - I'm glad to be the one to have done the work.

A lot of guys, myself included, enjoy getting to know the mechanical workings of a vehicle, and the satisfaction that comes from problem solving and keeping the car on the road with their own two hands. I can afford to take my car to a mechanic but prefer not to.
As mentioned above, you also become intimately familiar with your car, especially important if you've picked a pre-owned one. I'm sure that more than few guys here could tell you stories of a car picked up from a shop and found shoddy work or damaged and broken items under the hood from leaving their car with the professionals. Yes, even the dealerships.
You obviously enjoy spending your time immersing yourself in the dealership experience with the coffee and cute baristas (who probably find your flirtations nauseating). That's great. But please do not just suggest for one second that DIYers are wasting their time.

John loves to use idiom or "devil's advocate" to get a laugh. Surely, you don't think he'd spend countless hours participating in Rennlist to insult people for the very reason that the forum exists.
I find most of his writings down right funny and insightful.

Ya, he seems to be a little grumpy but his assessment of the 991 was probably the post of the year so far.
