Default Have to hold the gas out to the floor

I have a 6spd 1999 C2 with 120,000 miles runs great, But half the time I have to hold the gas pedal to the floor for it to start. Then it smells a little flooded. I also have noticed that there is a slight tapping sound in the outer right bank just below the EGR. I remove the vacuum line and it still makes the same sound. The sound was more prominent until I put an oil treatment in. Since the sound got better I'm thinking of going to 15-50 weight. any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Do not put anything beyond 5W50 into your car. It won't resolve your problem and it's not healthy for your engine.

Not sure how much benefit there is to holding the gas pedal to the floor as the fuel is metered by the amount of air the engine using. Since the engine isn't running yet it is not using any air. And there is no accelerator pump -- a feature of carbureted engines -- to richen the mixture.

You need to get this looked into. It is abnormal behavior and if the engine is runnng rich, richer than normal, at cold start, this can be washing oil from the cylinder walls and possibly compounding the problem.

The tapping noise may or may not be related to the hard starting but this too should be looked into.

If the engine was loose enough to make a noise with any recomended/approved 0w-40, or 5w-40 oil even using an approved 5w-50 oil, or even a 15w-50 oil (though that is not approved oil) isn't going to make any difference.

Get the abnormal behavior looked into and addressed and use an approved/appropriate oil for your location's ambient temperature.

Crank Position Sensor? Lots of hard start threads coming up at the top of page 1 of the 996 board in the past week. We may need to get the Center for Disease Control involved.

i never use the gas pedal when starting - just engage clutch, other foot on brake and crank.

In most fuel injected cars, cranking with the pedal at wot shuts off the injectors.

Do you potentially have some leaking injectors that flood the engine?
