Default Door Woofer Upgrade

Does anyone know a decent low range 5.25 speaker for the door that won't break the bank? I put some components in my door and now it sounds like crud when I listen to Jay-Z. I can't find any 5.25 low range speakers. Anyone have any suggestions?

5.25 and woofer (or low range) are mutually exclusive regarding speakers generally. Bass frequencies require moving large volumes of air which require a large area of speaker cone. I have used 5.25 components with cross overs in several vehicles with great results. Did you use a cross over and if so did you wire it correctly?

I used a inexpensive set of 5.25 speakers like this: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_2064CS5...9297145&awdv=c

ahhh that makes more sense. Garbage speakers = garbage sound. Components are separate speakers along with a cross-over so the lows go to larger speaker and the highs go to the tweeter. You want something like this below. It is definitely worth the little extra coin.

Tang Band 5-1/4" neodynium subwoofer. I just installed them a few weeks ago with an amp... my initial review was that they didn't make that big of a difference but after a week or so they broke in and I also bridged the amp so they sound pretty darn good now. Otherwise you can spend a crapton more money on Focals.

+1 on the Tang Bands ... went with these also. IMO a huge improvement over factory subs, and very reasonably priced! Install is a bit more than plug/play, but you can find install help here and other places on the net.

Unfortunately, good bass out of a 5.25 is going to cost you. You need high quality speakers, high quality crossovers, and a high quality amp.

If you're listening to Jay-Z I suspect you want to bump a bit. The cheapest way to do that would be a separate bass amp and sub(s). I would suggest a box and sub(s) behind the rear seats.

+1 on the Tang Bands. Amazing little speakers. Here is a writeup on how to put them in.

I remember when I was younger I had a VW GTi that I installed a big subwoofer box in the back with two 10" Kicker subs.

Now I don't listen to hip hop or rap but instead rock. I would blast Slayer, Pantera, and Metallica and my car would be booming from the bass guitar and double bass of the drums. That was fun!

Now I still listen to the same in the P-car but using the crappy stock system. Not really a problem though as the flat-six sounds much better than the 1.8 4 banger did back then.

Ordered the tangbangers, we will see how dey go. Someone mentioned getting the "HAES" speaker boxes for the doors as they flow air better? Is this a myth?

Is there a favorite sub for the 996 that you can add without going bonkers? Looks like there is decent room behind the back seats for something. I'm not looking to go crazy and that I can hook up the amazing CDR220. Maybe I will wait and see how the tangbangers sound first..

I replaced my door speakers with a high end 2-way 5 1/4 speaker, 4" components up front, 4" 3-way in the back. Bass was lacking so I added a 8" bazooka tube right behind the rear seats. It fits right in that gap nicely and I can remove it if I need the space.

EDIT: I should also mention the door speakers are crossed over at the factory amp and don't have their own output from the factory head unit (cdr-220) so if you want an improvement you should upgrade that amp.
