Default Jacking issues

I wanted (& still want ) to take all wheels off and read the rennlist guide posted to get all four corners in the air which suggests after getting stands under the front points and then using the very back of the engine after the sump you can lift the two rear wheels to get jack stands under the rear load points.

I got as far as stage two but as I gently started to lift the weight some fluid (green and smelly so guess it antifreeze) came out from directly above the exhaust tips both sides. I lowered it back and it stopped.

I have not been losing water as far as I can tell, the header tank still has fluid in, the car has had a smell about it since I brought it a year ago. But in that time I have done some long drives 200 + miles and it has not overheated or lost fluid.

Have a damaged something jacking it this way or any ideas what could be happening. Or what damage could i have done (& so need to repair)?

Thanks O_Sr

Hydraulic fluid from your motor mounts. Time for new motor mounts. I know it is debatable but I never use the "jack the engine" technique. Way too much to go wrong.

A/ Yes picture shows the area I used (as the renn list instruction ) but I'm guessing I have caught something wrong.

B/ "I know it is debatable but I never use the "jack the engine" technique. Way too much to go wrong."

update - just been for a run out about 10 miles and have a definite water leak now (engine steaming at rear) so I have to of either lifted it wrong, upset something further that was already leaking or just been unlucky I guess.

Either way I will have to trace and fix

The usual suspects: Cracked coolant reservoir; Water pump; lines/hoses/connections. Best of luck

Did the coolant level drop in the expansion tank?

Not that I noticed no ... Why does that suggest anything?

I usually just drive my 996 over a plank of wood of a 2x6 to get it a few inches higher so the jack can reach a good jacking point. I'd never never never use the engine as a jacking point.

I've never had to lift the front yet-but Its a bridge I will have to cross soon as I do my front brakes. I took a peek underneath and could not find anywhere good to lift from . All I see is plastic trays everywhere.

Was still thinking that it might be hydraulic fluid from your motor mounts and not a coolant leak. If the coolant hasn't dropped, then it might be something else.

Yes I would agree with this but wanted all 4 wheels off for a refurbishment and was looking to do the rear brakes at the same time. I cannot easily identify good jacking points it all looks fragile under there, hence took the besta dvice I could find..

I will let it cool down over night and try and look at it tomorrow in daylight from cold and see if I can id the area of loss. I will see if the RT has water in it.

It looks to be high up like the bottle. I cannot see why lifting the engine would cause this to go. How much hydraulic fluid are we talking about is there a reservoir or are these things self contained?

Self contained. About 1/4 cup each?
These are pretty handy.
