BMW Dealership burned by IMS
A friend of mine who is a tech at a large BMW dealership in the Northeast told me they recently took in a 2004 Porsche 911 C4S Cabriolet in trade. He said when they serviced it they found large amounts of shrapnel in the oil filter and realized the IMS was about to explode. Already too late to replace the IMS they are now sitting on a $5-$7k roller that he says they gave the owner big bucks in trade. This 996 had approximately 50k miles on it. If they were willing to part with it for $5-$7k I thought it might be a great opportunity for a 996 owner with a car with a solid engine but perhaps a marginal body and interior. He said this car is mint. The previous owner is one lucky bastard.

Nice thread title. Great, now we can introduce even more IMS paranoia making 996's worth nothing to dealers. As if no other make was ever traded in by the owner with engine/transmission issues the owner didn't disclose.

this story sounds like BS to me - you're telling me a dealership didn't inspect car properly and didn't inspect oil filter prior to accepting a $30K car in trade??
besides, who the hell would ever side with a dealership? dealerships are so full of sh_t and full of lies and deceit - lot boy probably drove it hard w/o warmup or salesman drove it hard and over revved which happens every day and they are blaming previous owner.
great lesson for the dealership and sounds like karma bit the dealership in the ***.

No BS. My friend offered $6k for it but they aren't biting. I agree that someone screwed up big time not taking a closer look at it.

I think it's close to equal odds that the seller just got lucky as that they scammed the dealer.

i'm not claiming the car doesn't exist - i'm saying the story is BS and i doubt very much a dealership would not do their due diligence in checking over car completely including inspecting oil filter and even in most cases dropping oil sump plate to make sure their asses are covered when accepting a $30K 996 on trade - dealerships are well aware of 996 issues - i just don't buy it
of course i didn't consider that a seattle BMW employee could have been stoned out of his mind and during inspection, forgot to open up oil filter and forgot to drop oil sump plate - bummer dealership dudes
