Trust me....they won't unless the vehicle gets CPO'd.

Then a tech has to look over the vehicle in detail, note all the problems and give the used car sales manager an estimate on what it would cost to fix it. If cost to repair cuts into the profit margin too much, it's sent off to auction or wholesale.

I would know. I'm a dealer tech.

If PO knew the car was in bad shape, you think he would have installed a new filter to try to disguise the fact that the car was ill. Makes me wonder if he had any idea...

*edit* after reading the rest of the posts, I see that I enzoed this thread. Oops.

Most of them don't.. Its their own dumb *** fault for not checking vehicles closer, BUT they can't find anyone technically capable of doing the inspection, anyway.

This is one thing that breeds these issues with used cars being "Max Attacked", as often as they are. A "Max Attack" is when someone passes their problematic Porsche onto the next poor enthusiast, but uses Car Max, or a similar entity to facilitate this. These people think they are screwing the corporation, but they aren't. The only way the corporation gets screwed is IF the engine fails while its at the dealership, and that seldom happens.

That said, its a very tough thing selling used cars. Its tough for even those of us who do business the right way not to have some mechanical issue pop up with a buyer after a recent purchase.

Thats one reason why we no longer deal with used cars here. I had a situation that **almost** got me in trouble last year, and it was a reality check. That issue was light, it was a problem with a convertible top, and not an engine. The next time could have been an engine though, so it was time to get out, and stay out.

yeah, that's what was explained to me. also something like 70% of their trade ins get sent to the states due to our dollar at the moment.

I traded in a car last year. Used Car Manager looked it over, drove it in the parking lot, asked me a few questions and offered me "X". That was it. I guess they were just going to wholesale it out?

That's what they all do, that's why auction cars are so hit/miss.

Probably because they were wondering "What the hell is a Saab?".

I can see why the small lots would do it more so than somewhere like a CarMax. The small lot stands to lose a lot more and can't really subsidize a car that goes kaput. While the big chains have a process and figure a few bad apples is the cost of doing business.

True! I just read this weekend that 200,000 Cdn cars made their way to the States last year due to our Cdn $ being so low. The majority were small and larger used pick-ups.

I wouldn't know. I'm in the NY/NJ metropolitan area.

Sorry dgi 07, I meant it for general knowledge. My quote didn't go quite the way I intended it.

So much of it depends on the dealership. The lot from whom I bought my 996 was very persistent about buying my 986 - I didn't want to take the dealer trade hit, but they were insistent and willing to negotiate a fair price, and I understand why as it was a very nice specimen of 986 Boxster in a desirable color (seal grey) - they went over it with a fine-toothed comb.

It's always nice to see your old car on the lot instead of headed out for wholesale/auction. The last time I saw my 986, it was parked in their showroom next to an Aston...I feel like we parted on good terms.

My 2001 Honda S2000 which I loved and pampered for 11 years and 125k miles was auctioned off then on to Ebay where the winning bidder was an 80 year old man from Fairbanks Alaska. I'm from Massachusetts. At least he was a car guy. We keep in contact. His first car was a then new Porsche 356.
