Default Dash Lights On...Dash Lights Off

I have a vexing problem where 'on occasion', the dash lights will stay on even after the motor is off, key is out and doors are locked. Don't want to drain the battery, so I have to disconnect the battery (and for goodness sake - don't close the trunk and lock the doors...it locks the hood release...).

I figured it's got to be ignition switch, so changed it out. So you go along for a couple of weeks - all is good. Then out of the blue....lock the doors and the dash lights are still on.....for several days....then out of the blue, go back to normal.

I'm thinking it could be the steering wheel lock. Anybody have any other ideas??

Not the steering wheel lock - it's the electrical part of the ignition switch. Once it starts to get screwy, all sorts of crap like this happen.

This is the "$12 at Napa" switch that you see in bazillions of threads.

Yes, and it seems to fail repeatedly. I replaced mine about 18 months ago, and it's acting up again.

Is there a better quality replacement available that won't fail again so soon?

The dealers will tell you the only permanent cure is to change out the steering wheel lock and switch, about $600

I replaced it with the part that Pelican sells - http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg2.htm#item8 - for $28.50 3 years ago. It is still working fine.

This - if the issue is only the electrical behavior - is just not true, but it's entirely possible the dealer legitimately believes it.

Changed out the ignition switch recently, but it's still exhibiting the same behavior.

May try removing the steering wheel lock to see if that takes care of it.

When that happened, were the parking lights also ON?
Next time instead of disconnecting the battery, try to remove and reinstall fuse B1 and see what happens.

No lights except dash left on. I'll try the r&r of the B1 fuse. Thanks!

When the failure occurs, do you also lose ac dash gauges or other items?

I doubt you're going to get a response from John. His last activity was on 3/25/18, and this thread is over 2 years old. Good luck.
