Default Gundo/Fister/PSE mod, what the heck I did both

I know this topic is about beat to death but it all new to me. I was starting to thread jack over in the "Gundo vs Fister thread so I'm starting my own. Cutting to the bottom line there is no droan and the car finally sounds proper to me. At idle still pretty quite all in all and that suits me just fine. Tip into the throttle and the sound gets "Glorious". I had my favorite exhaust shop here in town, "Ed Hanson Muffler" in Spring Valley do the job. My friend Kevin works there and I trust his opinion of what's happening with this mod. According to him the PSE mod shortens the exhaust path out of the muffler and we all know that(See pic). Combined with the Fister hack though as pressure builds in the muffler the bypass takes more effect and comes into play. I used a 2" pipe for the PSE mod, and 1-1/2" for the Fister hack. I'm very happy with the sound and volume as it not obnoxiously loud, louder for sure but not over done.

I'm going to try to put up a vid tomorrow so you all can hear it too. Here are the pic's or it didn't happen. Thanks "KoB" for the cool exhaust flow diagram. I'd say it's "Rich Mahogany" for sure "ACE51" said that's what it would sound like in the other thread and he's right.

Right on. I dig the ingenuity.

Interested to hear what it sounds like.

I have Fister D's directly from Darin at FD Motorsports on my 2001 C4.

PCA has an autocross at Qualcomm on Saturday if you have any desire to meet up and get a side-by-side comparison.

Yes I am planning to be there in the morning we could do the side by side comparison then.

I would think it is "mellower"....read "less loud" than a regular fister.....
Reason being that the exhaust have "less" bypass, since some of it goes thru the muffler...

Your probably right. I did use a smaller pipe than the true Fister mod and could be why at idle and light throttle it sounds about as loud as stock except with more tone if you know what I mean. That is probably because of the PSE mod bypassing one of the chambers. When moving a larger volume of exhaust through the system though it really sounds good IMO because of the combination of the two. I'm working on that vid and should have something in a day or two.

I did this about 1.5 years ago, and can vouch for it sounding fantastic. There isnt a lot more noise inside the car (even with the top down), but from outside it sounds great. Ive had people make comments about how great it sounds even while just puttering around a parking lot.

I dont know of anyone around me with a fister or gundo hack alone, so i cant compare to those; I can say everytime we start thinking about getting a different exhaust my wife and i come to the same conclusion; "why?"

One thing that was weird on my mufflers is that when we cut off the cap on the can itself, mine didnt have a tube/pipe inside under that 3rd port. From looking on line, most do but mine didnt.

Folks,

I'm looking at a local shop in the Oak Park, IL area. I want to use 1.5" but not sure if I should use Stainless or Galvanized and then painted with high temp paint.

What material are the original mufflers actually made of of?

Also, is there any easy way to source fasteners for all the bolts and nuts that I might need to replace?

The shop didn't have the stainless pipe in stock, and they aren't sure they even have the specific nuts and bolts. My 17-yr-old car never say salt or even rain, so I don't think there will be much rust. Then again, this is an exhaust system, so all bets might be off.

How do I polish those tips after the fact?

I would go with stainless. If you do use galvanized steel, be sure to point it out to the welder so he doesn't inhale that sh*t. The factory cans are stainless.

The mufflers are held to the cats using clamps

The tips are mounted to the mufflers with this clamp:

Here's a full set of 996 muffler mounting hardware:

2x 99611122002 Pipe Connector, 55.5x75mm
2x 99611110800 Clamp, Ø70mm
2x 90037818301 Bolt, M8x1.25x140mm
2x 90037810501 Bolt, M8x1.25x70mm
12x 90038000501 Lock nut, M8x1.25mm

Awesome, thanks guys. It turns out that all the bolt and clamps had zero rust on them. I guess when an owner doesn't drive the car in the snow or even rain, let alone drive the car much at all, this can happen. I was expecting a tough time getting this done, but the job was quite easy and simple to do. I ended up with 1.5" galvanized pipe painted with high temperature paint. I wanted Stainless but the only size the shop could get (SuperMax in Chicago) was 2" and they couldn't make it work. But the sound is glorious, albeit a little louder than I expected. The audio clips people are posting with the iPhone don't really sound the same as it does in person.

My understanding is that the Fister cross-pipe is 1.75" OC stainless, TIG welded. I believe Summit Racing sells the stainless pipe in 1.75".
