Why the 996 is better than the 993.
Opinion piece from Total 911 magazine.

And I totally agree.

Amazon sales not going well so Johnny had to pick up a side job?
I can't disagree with anything in there, but I'm just so tired of the "my favorite is better than your favorite" BS. Really there is no bad 911, especially when you take them in the context of their era. Each generation has its pluses and minuses and the combinations appeal to different people.

Lol, what slack jawed moron wrote that article.
so it doesn't overheat in traffic...nor does any properly running 993 I've ever seen or heard about.
Driving position and button position. Fine, even though I prefer the closer to the windshield feeling in the 993.
the 996 is more nimble? what? how? moron.
flat motor? eh, neither of them are particularly fast or quick revving, but ok.
Better looking? what a crock of ****, but ok fine, subjective
and to conclude, its cheaper.
I'm surprised this mouth breathing idiot was even able to make it through the day.

I don't think anyone can argue the performance and creature comfort improvements of the 996 over the 993.
The 993 will always continue to be placed on a pedestal because it is the last of the 911s that had the old world feel to it. That is something you can't put into words or compare with statistics. The 996 offers a driving experience that is distinctly Porsche but has a lot more in common with "regular" vehicles than a 993 ever will.
If you're looking for that unique experience that includes all sorts of smells, sounds, and quirky ergonomics that you can't find anywhere else, then a 996 will never satisfy those needs. But if you want a reasonably priced performance car that is versatile enough for daily driving, track duty, and who knows what else then the 996 is probably a better choice.
But you can't say one is better than the other because they are different enough to keep you from being able to make a direct comparison. Depends on what you need it for. I chose a 996 because I wanted a daily driver. If my Porsche was my 3rd or 4th car I would have purchased a 993 when I had the chance to pick one up for $27k. Oh well, my mistake!

I need to drive my friends 993 sometime, but I agree with this. The 996 is a pretty modern common car, and although special it's not the same as the generations before it.

As far as the overheating, I will give you that NJ is a hellhole of such epic proportions that physics may not always apply, but in the rest of the world air cooled cars do not like idling in traffic during hot weather. That's not to say that they will overheat and seize, but a driver that cares about such things does start to pucker as the needle on the temp gauge continues to creep in the wrong direction.
For the second, the 996 has been shown many times and in many venues to out perform the equivalent 993. It's a simple act of evolution and there is nothing to get your panties twisted about. Oh my god! The 997 out performs the 996. Crap! The 991 out performs the 997! Someone alert the media!

Aw crap, the old men from the lawn-mower engined forum are going to be all over in here again. It took us like 3 weeks to get rid of the old man stench last time they came over in significant numbers.

I work on and drive both 993's and 996's regularly...
-993 is a PIA to work on in many ways, Porsche just added and added stuff to the original 911 chassis, has more character and gives greater sense of occasion-great weekend car
-996 is clean sheet development and 'better' in every dimension, minus engine durability Carrera vs Carrera models, and is wayyy better to work on-great daily driver or track builds
Both great cars. Very similar, very different.
Cheers,
Rob

I haven't driven a 993 and don't know how it feels but 1) I just don't like the sound, and 2) the interior reminds me of my brother's 1973 BMW 2002 (very dated).

You think he is an idiot, yet most his points you tacitly agree with or at least don't contest?

As for your points, I agree that its cheaper and has some more power.
Its no where near better looking stevie wonder, nor do the ergonomics or driving position feel better for sporting driving to me.
As for overheating...simply no. Stock 993s don't overheat in traffic. Does the oil temp increase? Sure. Then they have these nifty things called fans that turn on and reduce the oil temp. Fun how that works.
Does the oil temp in the 996 increase in traffic too? It sure does, but then you wouldn't know that because they don't even give you an oil temp gauge.
This article is just click bait bull****.
