Hey I'm having some issues with my MY02 996 3.6.
I have had the car around a month with no issues. Last weekend I took it up great ocean road in Vic and copped a LOT of bugs on the way home so not sure if that's contributing.
The car starts and drives fine mostly but since that trip sometimes I get a surge of power with what feels like a thud and then the engine completely turns off while I'm driving (all warning lights appear due to the ignition position) but no warning lights when the issue occurs. Not safe or ideal. Any ideas? Has anybody had any experience with this kind of thing? When I try to restart after it cuts out I can't get it to start without giving it a bit of accelerator then it's fine again.. I've had spark plugs replaced and my mechanic drove the car without incident of course :-/
Could it be bugs? Or something more ominous?..
Thanks.
My car has a slight surge at around 1/4 or less throttle application (2002 C2 3.6 Tip). It's like I'm giving it gas and letting off repeatedly. If I give it more throttle it doesn't do it. Is that what yours is doing? Mine hasn't shut off though. I'm curious to know what is going on also.
A surge at around 3k RPM is just the Variocam system activating, that's normal.
When you get the surge what Rpm is the engine at? Might just be a MAF enrichment issue. Do you have am aftermarket air intake? Sometimes over-oiling those filters will foul the MAF. Buy some MAF cleaner at the auto store and the tamper proof torx bit needed to remove it.
I'm at low rpms, and just slight throttle during acceleration. I don't think it's at a specific rpm. The car came with a K&N intake so you are probably right regarding the MAF being dirty. Thanks!
According to my mechanic it's the engine speed sensor/cam sensor which is faulty. Part ordered $360 so I will let others know if it sorts the problem of power surge then engine cut off once it has been replaced. Thanks so far for everybody's input.
I thought it may have been the immobiliser if all else failed but that was always a long shot..
My car is stock no mods (air filters etc) so presumably easier to identify the fault.. We will see..

I don't remember any MAF issue resulting in the car shutting down completely. If the MAF is fouled, you'll get fuel trim/lean/similar codes; if the MAF is completely hosed, you'll get codes about the MAF voltage being incorrect/out of range.
Metalbattle, let us know if replacing the part(s) you ordered does the trick.

So far so good. No engine cut off since replacing the cam position sensor (touch wood). If pain persists I'll let members know. So if your engine surges with a bit of a thud then your engine cuts out whilst driving then it's likely your cam position sensor. Although a couple of times it cut out without the surge. Was happening at different rev ranges and speeds.
Hope this helps others encountering the same problem. Thanks to all who contributed with their thoughts :-)
