Right, moving on from R&T's article, actually don't think it belongs in this thread but anyhow I came across this review recently.

Digging up this thread, it is worthy of it!!

OK, what is faster, a very old 996 or a brand new Golf GTI?

Not really , I've got about a dozen excellent turbo articles but intentionally didn't post them here because the turbo has its own rennlist forum .

The naturally aspirated cars have their own unique character , strengths and weaknesses , the turbo it's own .
Otherwise rennlist would have a combined forum .

Start posting NA 996 stuff in the turbo forum and see what kind of reception you get .

That Fast Lane Car video is pretty funny. I happen to own both of the competitors, and the idea that the GTI can give the 996 a run never occured to me. I love them both, and the funny thing is the interior of the VW is a lot nicer, both in execution and material quality.

That argument may hold water when talking technology, but I refer to interior quality. An example would be the cheezy paint used on the plastic surfaces, IMO there is no excuse for that in a car that cost upwards of $80k in 2002.

Uh, what cheezy paint? Here's a photo of my 2002 C4S. You can disregard the upgrades, but I happen to think the factory flat black paint on the plastic bits and pieces, like the console, door, etc, have held up well for a 15 year old car.

Yeah, I don't know, looks pretty good to me for a 20 year old.... This is the interior as it left the factory, no upgrades, just maintained well.
