Default Coolant poluted with tap water

Had to add approx 3 liters of tap water to my coolant tank due to a leak at the water pump while driving home

As I am about to change the water pump, do I need to flush and refill with new coolant/distilled water mix, or just add some more of the proper coolant?

Yes. Flush and refill. You need about 3 gallons Porsche coolant and 3 gallons of distilled water. Next time, top off with bottled water, that would have been a better choice than tap water.

Jay, if you want to borrow my AirLift system for the flush-and-fill, let me know.

That was some leaking water pump. It is a wonder it did not fail catastrophically. I have to stress that it really is risky to drive with a known bad water pump. The unit can go from noisy/leaking just a bit to the point the impeller blades make contact with the engine block and then you can have some real problems. Or the thing breaks and that ain't good either.

As for the question about the coolant after adding tap water no one can say for sure but Porsche advises using distilled water with anti-freeze. While there are some owners who have used tap water the numbers are so small we have no real data on this.

Thus to play it safe draining the coolant and refilling with a fresh batch of coolant consisting of the proper ratio of anti-freeze and distilled water is best.

An added benefit is the new water pump and the engine and its cooling system components start out with new coolant with all its ability to resist corrosion active and on the job, so to speak.

Yea, we all have 20-20 hindsight.
Probably should not have driven it home
