The whole exhaust system in 996 is stainless. Ferritic stainless steel to be precise, so the magnet will stick to it.

Technically you are probably right but I think most of us when using the term "stainless", we are thinking 304 and above that doesn't rust as easily.

With that said, with the double walled construction, I have yet to see a rust through on the muffler case itself. I've only witnessed rusting on the edge flanges and internal pipes.

Unfortunately no. I hope to get it done by the end of the month as it's looking now(thanks to the house remodel and 3 young kids). However now I have all three setups(factory cats, cat bypass, 200 cell cats) to test the gutted mufflers with to see which sounds the best.

Very interested in the outcome.

I finally got my original mufflers gundo hacked with a 2 inch pipe (screams like a virgin on WOT), and what a difference between the 1.5 inch that I had done on the Gemballa cans. I don't think I will be doing anything more to it other then adding 200 cell cats when my original ones go out.

I have allso some surface rust on my mufflers. The reason why I posted my last post, is that the welder needs to know what the material is. Of course you can weld the cases with steelwire (mig) or steel rod (tig) but the seam will rust faster than rest of the case.
I welded mine with steel, but knowing that the seams will rust faster.

Thanks for the tip but since I'm not the typical RL worry wart, I think plain ole steel will be fine as I was plan on coating the mufflers anyways.

Shed had to come first. Just finished it and moved 2 motorcycles, 4 bicycles, 2 sets of wheels, 5 planters, dog cage, 2 mufflers into it. Now I gotta find a way to take a break from the basement remodel to tackle car stuff again.
