Possible good buy, but can't get the owner to return my email. I'm probably a little late. Has anyone else gone to see it?

Default Is it too good to be true?

Found this north of Seattle
https://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/6203098795.html
I called and the story is that it is a theft recovery written off by Insurance and that it is in perfect condition. The current seller just bought it to flip it and has zero knowledge or understanding about the car. My question is, Why would an Insurance Company total a perfectly good car just because it was stolen?

A mechanical issue seems most likely, but it's always worth asking. I know a guy whose Lotus sat for an entire driving season while he worked through knee problems.

Sometimes it's the car, sometimes it's the owner.

Because they paid out before it was recovered

Answer: Like others have mentioned... Because, more than likely, the insurance company paid off the owner for the car. Most insurance companies will require a sufficient amount of time for law enforcement to recover the car. Usually 30 - 60 days, if the car is not recovered, then the owner is offered a payout. Then, if the car is ever recovered, the owner gets first opportunity to buy back the car. In the case of this white Carrera, the owner probably decided against buying it back. Why? More than likely, they used the money to buy another Porsche or bought something else. Insurance companies don't like to hold onto cars, and so they'll sell them locally or at auction for pennies on the dollar. I'm willing to bet you they sold that car to the current owner for about the same as the current DMV value which is in $10K range. The current DMV value on my 03 Cab was only $11K.

Your state's tax office should provide you the figure. They base it on numerous appraisal sources. And, they're usually much lower than book retail.

the FSI-built 3.6L 1999 appears to still be for sale, asking price $29,500

Negotiate to 27,500 and walk away a happy man imo. 15k on the build, 57k on the chassis.

Not a totally bad deal considering the condition and miles. However, I've seen a few C4S (in this condition) for under $20,000 in the last 6 months. In fact, there was a low miles (under 50K miles) beautiful speed yellow C4S at a Porsche dealership for $22,900 in Cali. That was a crazy good deal. It looked brand new. If I had the money, I would have scooped it up. Kinda crazy what depreciation is doing to these cars. This is a car that a few years ago was commanding $35K+, but I guess with the poor reputation of the motor has caused it to depreciate. I looked up auction prices on this car and it seems a "fair" condition C4S will sell for about $17,500 on average. That's auction prices. Heck, I saw a 996 Turbo that was very nice go for $27,000 at a Barrett-Jackson auction. I would say it was in excellent condition and sure it would hit above $30K, but it didn't. Sadly, the auctioneer mentioned the hated "fried egg" headlights and IMS problems with the 996, but clarified that the Turbo had a different engine design. Oh well.

If I buy this car, will someone trade me for another 996 C2 coupe with similar conditions and specs?

That's an older FSI build and has been on the market for a long time.
