...if my budget was a little higher I'd probably grab this 01 M5 for $18k. In that condition at 117k in 2-5 years, I'd probably be able to make $5k on it.
996 is hard to get away from though, it's an old school sports car that really focuses on the important stuff (the driving experience), and it's an unbeatable value. More practical than going down the Boxster road, too.
Nice little 6 speed cab with 101k miles, asking $15,900. No affiliation, but just about 10 minutes from me if anyone wants a Rennfax done. Appears to be private seller. Nice part of town.

E39 M5 is a stellar choice. I was deciding between E39 and 996 initially, went 996 primarily because I wanted to try a non-BMW (my previous car was an E46), but the allure was too strong and I ended up going down that road anyway. Considering how practical and comfortable it is, the sheer power and capability of that car is untouchable. They're going up though, clean, low-mileage E39 M5s are real money now, especially in desirable colours (LMB, especially, but also Imola and Alpine).

I feel like I'm hijacking this thread, so I started another to ask a question about maintenance costs.

Anyone else thing the door gap is off and the color seems uneven. Thinking there is some damage in this car's history.

Wow! That Teal 996 in Seattle is very nicely optioned.
Bottom line, if someone on Rennlist is considering this car, you need to ****** it up ASAP!
I wonder if the LSD still works properly?
Refinished sets of the widebody 993 Hollow Turbo Twists sell for $3-$5k on the used market, I think the 18" narrow body offset hollow twists are even more rare than the wide body rims!
Someone could buy that car and sell off the rims and replace with solid twists and recoup some of that expense. Or keep the car 100% original (I'd change headlight/tailight & side markers to non-yellow OEM versions) as this one might be one of those 996's that is primed to go up in value sooner than later... Bottom line, it's not one of your standard low-optioned Silver/Black, Dark Blue/Gray or Black/Black coupes out there in such high quantity...
IMHO, for the price, that car is very much worth it...
Here is my deciphered options list...

4 of the options we originally spec'd out for her's, but they only offered them as part of a package for MY01 which conflicted with other packages we had to take to get other options she wanted.
00 had ala-cart and they went back to it in 02. Still irks me to this day...

There is one that pops up for sale ever couple of years that is the same color, but it has the green interior. We make lots of fun of that car every time it pops up

I personally think it's a fabulous color, but then I like the Chromaflair (ME) too which is another that people love or hate...

Are you sure about those wheels? Didn't look like anything I haven't see on any number of other early 996's.

The standard turbo-look twists are solid wheels and if you reach around to the inside of the spoke you will feel long vein-like ridges with your fingers. The solid wheels are a good bit heavier than the hollow wheels.
Wasn't kidding about the prices for the true hollow turbo twists. Look them up on ebay...

I dunno about that dealership, honestly. They had a low-mileage 996TT that I went to see, and it was relatively beat up on considering the mileage. They don't seem to know much about Porsches either, or at least the guy I talked to didn't.
A lot of 996.1s have the 993 Turbo-look wheels, which are solid-spoke and far heavier. The actual 993 Turbo came with the lighter hollow-spoke wheels, which were a rare option on 996.1. They look the same on the front side, but you can tell the difference by the back of the spokes (smooth for hollow spokes, two ridges for solid spokes).
Edit: Jaetee beat me to it. But yeah, they're super light and do improve steering feel (I have hollow spoke Twist II fronts on my Carrera 4.)
