But it IS closed properly, so the alarm won't beep. It's just got two holes in the top.

You've done this mod too? He glued it down. That doesn't seem to be using the same interlocking mechanism that prevents the beep.

If the console lid is closed, then why would the alarm beep? It doesn't matter if it's glued or not, as long as the console lids microswitch is triggered.

I wonder if this step is necessary if you cut and shape the cover. I wonder if that would work just fine on its own.

I thought of that too, but it wouldn't look as clean, the op's almost looks like a factory option

Yes I considered skipping the insert. You're basically adding a few "pressure points" for plastic to touch the cup. A small cup that is too narrow to touch the console lid holes won't move around with the insert.
I would love to say I figured everything out ahead of time. The reality is that I bought the insert and it is not practical to have the console cover that would lay down on the cups. So I yanked the console cover. That looked unfinished so I started plotting how to get a cover back on there. I have to say I am Texas white trash and do stuff like this around the car, house and boat all the time. After a few hundred incidents this is the first one that has actually been practical and not ended in some sort of disaster.

Lol, this is funny. Thank you for your honesty but please stay away from cleaning/servicing firearms.
