Default It Pays to DIY ...

Every now and then over the past few months I've heard a faint metallic sound when shifting. There didn't seem to be any performance issue, just an odd noise. So I didn't think too much of it. I'd planned to upgrade the shifter anyway and had even picked up a used 997 shifter off eBay.

Then I got sucked in by the Numeric Racing group buy. My Numeric shifter arrived last week and today I found myself with a free afternoon. So I grabbed some tools and started to remove the center console. And pretty soon I figured out where the noise was coming from:

There was spare change everywhere ... about 11 bucks worth, at last count, although there's probably another buck or so in there that I couldn't get to. It was between the shifter cables and the carpet and all the way back to the area underneath the center console glove box. Not for the first time, I have concluded that my car's original owner may well have been an idiot.

Anyway, my Numeric shifter cost 11 bucks less than I'd anticipated, and shifts really well. So, I guess it's all good.

That's funny!

Glad it was an easy "fix".

That may be the only good money shift that's ever occurred.

So many coins, they must have made quite a bit of noise while driving.

Less than you might expect, actually, or maybe just not audible over wind/tire/engine noise. Here's a mediocre cell phone picture of the area beneath the rear of the center console. Also, note the can of PB Blaster I needed to help remove the shift **** :-)

Pull out your lumbar seat cushion and check for a couple bags of white powder. It could be a good mod fund.

Funny, same thing happened to me when I put in a 997 GT3 shifter. I think people try to install/remove the coin holder in the center console w/o taking the coins out, then slip and spill coins everywhere. Then, are too lazy to take everything apart to get the coins.

Funny you mention that, look what I found when installing my 997 shifter... Guess that's what I get for buying a used Porsche in Los Angeles...
