We don't really care about the profit..it's nice...but we are more interested in saving cars. Most of what we do is achievable with a good set of tools, guts and time...and for the record I work just as hard and I'm also a fully experienced mechanic. It's just the show isn't made that way. No doubt I receive dozens of insults now as usual but please just try to enjoy the show after all the car is always the star in Wheeler Dealers."
There are a few things Ed does on that show that even he admits an amateur mechanic probably shouldn't tackle. He often will say "you can do this but it is very hard". He also will always say when he is using some expensive piece of equipment and that you probably should go to a "specialist shop" as he calls them.

The only really big piece of equipment that he uses on every show is the lift. In fairness, I know two amateur mechanics who own lifts. They are expensive but not outrageously so if you are really into it. And most cities have garages with lifts that hobbyists can rent out.

To me the most "unrealistic" thing on that show is the body work Ed does. Body work and rust removal really is an art. His work is very good. You can do that stuff on your own. But no way is it going to look like it does when Ed does it. I think there are very few amateurs who could do the kind of rust removal and fabricating Ed China does. He does things like cut and replace pieces of A pillars on that show. That is masters level body work.

Question is, is he really an amateur? I thought he was a mechanic full time with his own shop before the show even started. I mean what amateur is gonna have his own alignment machine and emissions tester(unless he rented them)?

No. Ed China is not an amateur. He runs a specialty shop called Cummfy Banana where he builds these crazy things like an office desk with a V8 engine and wheels that goes 70 mph and then rents out rides on them. He built the stacked cars with the driver on bottom running the gas and the one on top steering that they used on Top Gear in the German cast challenge episode.

China is a very skilled mechanic and fabricator. But the point of the show is to show a professional doing stuff an amateur could also do.

The show IS fun to watch just to see how Ed goes about fixing stuff. The actual "profit" part is silly, because Ed's labor is free (which doesn't happen in the real world).

I would be more interested in seeing how Ed "mops" the paint and gets the cars to shine at the end!

I love the show and could watch just Edd going about his work. Mike reminds me of the used car salesmen that he is.

I'm always shocked at how corroded the underside of the cars are over there.

My son made a remark the other day about how many of the cars they've restored are models that I've owned. I replied "that shows you what impeccable taste your father has in cars" I believe currently they've restored 6 cars I've previously owned.

I'm not seeing a WD episode on the 993 on March 24th on my DVR schedule, time warner in Los Angeles. Anyone else able to find it? I do see a 944 and a 928 episode that day, though.

I was alerted from Wheeler Dealer thru my Facebook page but the 3/24 date may be for the BBC audience. We should be able to hunt it down on You Tube a week later.

Help - I've searched for this episode and don't see it. I have ATT U-Verse and I'm assuming this would be on Velocity which is where Wheeler Dealer is broadcast. The only thing out their is the 928, 914 and 944 programs.

Ed China and Mike Brewer probably make their big money on the films to be aired on the TV. Not actually on the cars they restore. The latest episodes are way over the normal DIY man capabilities because of all the expensive equipment Ed uses in his restorations. No way does the normal DIY man have such expensive equipment at his disposal in his own garage. W D is one of my all time fav TV shows.
