Looking for 996 Timing Chain with Link
Hi everyone,
My 996 needs a timing chain replacement. My goal is to replace is without splitting the block. Is that possible and where can I get one of those timing chains with master link? I have been unable to find them online so far.

Not made and a very bad idea.
What motor is in the car and why do u think the chain needs replaced?

Thanks for the reply De Jeeper. It's one of the very first 996s, engine M96.01. The timing chain on bank 1 started to rattle at cold starts and all tensioners have been changed recently.

Ok so u have a 5 chain and yeh u cant change the 3 long chains without splitting the block. If u want to do an engine out service u can change the pads on the front and rear chain but anything with the ims chain is a no-go.
First thing i would do is run a good scanner on it and get the cam deviation numbers. If they r near spec a major service is due and u can get to a lot of small things. If not just live with the rattle. Its pretty common in these motors.
If u search my sceen name i have done a thread on the variocam rehab before i did the motor swap. Lots of info here in this repair.

I have just recently acquired a 2001 996 with 177k mi. Runs smoothly, has a little buzz/rattle on deceleration @ 2500 rpm and sometimes a rattle with cold starts.
My Indy is busy right know to fully inspect/adjust.
I had the check engine light come on and it appears to be related to the first bank if I heard correctly.
Is it safe to drive or should I wait to have it fully inspected?

Maybe? Whats the code? Any parts store can read it or buy a $15 bluetooth obd2 reader from amazon. U may want to start a new thread.
