Does anyone have experience with a broken radiator due to an "off" at a track day?
I had a high speed exit this weekend, which had me sliding downhill at a high rate of speed. It turns our the ground was muddy and impacted the front fascia on the driver's side hard enough to snap the radiator housing. No other damage that I can see as of today. The car is at the performance shop at the track. They are going to clean it up and pull the bumper to tell me what all I am dealing with. The head mechanic there said they had seen several of these break before and it is a fairly common occurrence for Porsches. I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience?
I was instructing in a 996 when a ground hog entered the track in front of the car. The impact took out the drivers side radiator. Not that uncommon since the radiators are low to the ground.
Even if the radiator isn't leaking you may want to consider replacing it after that sort of off. It may be very difficult to get fully cleaned and all the fins back to straight to achieve optimum cooling. Without seeing it in person there's no way to be sure, but it's something to consider.
Hit some road debris -- Detroit Alligator (tire carcass) in KS -- and it busted the bottom of the driver's side radiator of my Boxster.
I suspect some drivers break their cars' radiators by pulling into a parking space too far and riding up on a too high curbstone which subjects the radiator to damaging stress.
