you didn't specify 996.2 headlights. the only 996.2 headlights I see on ebay (admittedly a very quick search) shows they all have projectors; whether they have HID bulbs is unclear. My original 996.1 had halogen headlights with reflectors. big difference.
so (based on my limited reading) there isn't a reason to crack open 996.2 headlights with projector housings; all you need is bulb and ballast.

So, I agree that all 996.2 housings have projectors...but not all projectors are HID projectors, and the Hella E55 HID projectors that are in the 996.2 are...crap.
I would love to swap out the E55s with something more modern, wider, sharper, and brighter, but I am too much of a chicken to risk breaking the covers. I wish I had the time and skill to make new Lexan covers for the lights, and a 3d printer big enough to print new housings. Oh the headlights I would make.

He used to be on the boxter forum. I think Pelican Parts carried his kits for awhile - that was a couple years ago...

Not to rub it in or anything, but I bought a set from him 3-4 years ago. One of the best mods I've ever done. With bi-xenon headlights and LED tail lights, my '99 looks at least 10 years newer. Too bad he's not still around.
