I've recently hit 100000km (60 k miles)
I know it's not a lot yet but I fully expect the car to go on forever
Really enjoying it
Got it when it had 67k km, it's my DD here in the great white north

107k. Carfax says the engine was replaced at 6k miles if I remember correctly. That may be the record for earliest failure

142,000 on original engine. Bought it two years ago at 100k with new clutch w/IMS. I've replaced the A/O separator, coil packs and a few other things, but I've mostly been driving the crap out of it. Love the car!

This is a very nice place to put my first post as my 996 c2 conv (dec. 1998) just hit 280k kilometers, which is about 170k miles.

It has the original engine and tiptronic automatic and the IMS bearing is also the same as the one it originally left the factory with.

Last year i replaced the alternator, water pump, coils and various other small items. And I am urrently considering replacing the IMS bearing for a ceramic upgrade, though the engine still runs exactly like it should we have just found some plastic residu in the carterpan... My mechanic tells me we should pull out the engine to replace the chaintracks. Upgrading the IMS bearing while the enige is out would be strongly recommended.

(edit: Corrected miscalculation on the km's to miles conversion, definitely not used to miles ;-P)

It's surprising to see, though I wonder how many of these high mileage cars see cold winters.

I live in the Netherlands and drive my car all year, our winters aren't extremely cold but we do get some snow and ice.

We do get a LOT of rain and humidity though...

Oh that is cold enough. Though I imagine it comes down to how loose your engine was at the start of it's life and how it broke in. Unfortunately I know of at least a dozen failed engines from acquaintances and friends at the track and coffee meets. This number alarms me when I personally know more people on their 2nd engine then their original.

Also does your Country enforce ethanol in the gas?

Does your motor make any chain noises?
What kind of oil have you used throughout your ownership?
Do you park in a garage and also do you use a block heater at all?

If you do get your chain guides replaced, please post pics. I'd be curious at the wear. I've seen chain guide wear all over the place which I attribute to maintenance, driving habits, oil and change intervals.

BTW, congrats on your mileage and usage. I think you got great value out of your 996 ownership, unlike some people.

No, no chain noises... The oildrain plug was seized so they took the pan off, that's the only reason the plastic residue was found.

I'll check on the oil-type my garage uses on my car.

No, my 928 sits in my garage and the 996 sits outside on my driveway (no heater, cover, etc).

I'll get pictures taken and post them here when I do get them changed out, but first I'll drive it a few thousand miles more to get a clearer idea of the current amount of wear.

Thanks, I hope to reach the mileage I have on my 928 which is almost 440k kilometers.

Damn at those miles, the car is paying you to drive it. Very nice!

380 000km and not the IMS ended the engine, but a spun bearing, which is basically a maintanance item.

Today my wife rolled 100000 miles on her 2000 C2. We bought it 3 years ago with 82000 on it. We couldn't be happier with it. All original. Planning on may more years and miles. Unless I get a great deal on a turbo cabriolet.... Uh Yeah.

2001 C2 Cab Tip. 175,000km on original engine. Never been opened or out. Just starting to leak at the rear and the valve covers.
