Thumbs down Hankook Ventus V12 worn out after 5,000 miles

Unbelievable. I have an '02 C4 Cab that I use as a daily driver. Back in April, 6 months ago, I purchased a brand new set of Hankook Ventus V12 and after 5,000 miles, they are balding, no kidding!

They have lost so much tread that after a few minutes of driving you can smell the rubber burning. I don't track the car and while I do drive sprited from time to time, for the most part I baby my baby.

The winter set is going on this week but I am fuming over the horrid tread life of the Hankook Ventus V12.

I just wanted to share as my experience can't be the only one as many have had good things to say about this tire.

Time for an alignment? Go with less negative camber in the rear. My rear sumis are cooked also around 5000 miles. Not unusual if you have an aggressive setup.

I have about 9K on Bridgestone Potena RE760's and they are wearing great. Very even and I can prob get 18K-20K out of them at this rate

Even with RWD, 5K of normal driving is pretty short

Def. an alignment issue. And as mentioned in another thread on rapid wear, improper toe angle causes major wear. A reputable shop that does P-cars on a regular basis should be able to solve your problem. IF the alignment numbers are within OEM parameters, then consider taking it up with the dealer that sold you the Hankooks for possible replacement.
A friend of mine with an 01 Cab purchases his PS2's from Costco, they wear out too quick (whatever the claimed miles are) and Costco replaces them for about half price with new ones. Costco has great service with whatever they sell.

Your alignment is f'd up. I love Hankook V12's great tire for the money and fine on wear.

I have Hankook V12 Venti with almost 20k miles on the fronts and 10k on the rears. I was shocked how well they hold up. FYI...any rear 996 tire will smell "cooked" due to the proximity to the exhaust. Totally normal.

Sounds like an alignment issue to me too.

That being said, rear tires don't last very long on a 996 even with proper alignment. I typically expect 10,000 miles on rears and 20,000 on fronts. Sometimes I don't get that many miles out of a set.

Get your alignment done by a dealer or a good independent Porsche mechanic. Don't have it done by a national chain tire store.

Pics of your tires? I think I already know how it's gonna look.

I had the car aligned when I had the tires put on but I hear what everyone is saying. I'm bringing it back to the tire shop this weekend to put the snows on and I'll check the alignment and have a couple of words for the shop as well. The alignment shouldn't have gone that out of whack that quickly unless they screwed up the alignment. I'll also make it a point to throw up some pic's once the tires are off. Thanks for the advice and for listening to me vent.

What specs did you have them do the alignment too? Are you talking about the rear tires or all 4?

It's always amazing when you take your summer tires off to put on your snows, and you see the inner edge of the rear tires. They look like they have plenty of tread left while they are mounted on the car, but once you get a close inspection you see the truth...

Another thing that will prematurely wear out the inside, is if you inflating it to what the sidewall says. I think the Hankook says 42 or 44, when that's just to high for the 911 spec. You wind up riding on the inside 2" unless the suspension is under nearly full compression. I burned up a set of 19" hankooks in about 6k mi, was an expensive lesson.

Last I checked the only pressure printed on tires is the maximum inflation pressure. You shouldn't be using that as any sort of guide for actual operating pressure.

It's a bad habit from driving trucks. Clearly it's a different mindset.

5k on the tire is well inside of average. Have your alignment checked. 44 psi cold (18") is your recommended pressure.
