Bulb type for high mounted 3rd brake light
(Searched but did not find info yet)
What is the bulb type in the high mounted 3rd brake light for the 996? I seem to recall somewhere there is the Porsche p/n but I'm trying to find alternative LED bulb as an experiment, so I need to know the actual bulb type number.
Thanks

Porsche doesn't sell the individual bulb. They expect you to replace the entire unit if a bulb burns out.
I took one to my local auto parts store and they were able to match it. I have subsequently switched to smoked LED units for both 3rd tail light units.

Pulled a bulb to look at, and it said W3W on the glass capsule, guess that's what it is. http://www.donsbulbs.com/cgi-bin/r/b...x9.5d~ece.html
But is also said w9L....., which also seems to be legitimate bulb type.
How confusing.

This is one of the best things you can do. I was really surprised that Porsche didn't come with LED 3rd brake light to begin with, but then again, I wasn't really expecting to see a tape player and cassette storage on a '99 either...

Aviography:
At this site: http://www.maxspeed-motorsports.com/...rakelight.html, there is a neat LED replacement light assy available for your 3rd brake light.
The appearance is white as you look at it but when you apply brakes, the LEDs light up red.
This company is moving from Laval, Qc to South Florida but there might still be units in Laval for you to purchase in case you are interested.
I got mine last year and quite pleased with the unit.
