Curious. WTF are K&N and BMC filter panels for our cars so damn expensive? I been using aftermarket MANN since got car but started thinking about maybe adding BMC or K&N and doing online searches I was shocked what they are charging for a piece of plastic and pleated fiber. I am so in the wrong business.
Sorry rant over.

I prefer the Mahle paper filters as well and don't think the oiled filters are a great choice for the 996, but $62 shipped doesn't seem overly expensive considering it's reusable. It's definitely not the price that's stopping me from using it.

The real question is why you would want to use a K and N?? Just take your filter out because that's just about what your doing with that filter anyways. Ofcoarse its a little better then that, but really not much. I have tested alot of filters in the past with my race cars and unless your racing, there is not point on uses a filter like that. Just use a stock paper filter and find "power" elsewhere. Leave those filters to the ricer that think they need it.

They do not seem that expensive to me. Also, in a dry sandy area that gets the filters dirty often...they can actually save money. I would not call them a ricer mod, I have used them since the early 90's and never had any issue. Some of the paper filters can add up also...
I am sure this has been discussed to death though by now Also, if you own a 911....an air filter should be the least of your maintenance $$$$ worries....just saying....LOL. Have the transmission rebuilt and talk to me about filter prices.

A mechanic made this analogy:
You have a screen door where you remove the original screening, and replace it with chicken wire covered with sticky stuff. It allows for greater air flow, and bugs that happen to hit the sticky stuff don't get into your house.

Love that! I'm stealing it for next time someone asks me the diff between filter types.
