Default 996 Targa Rear Window Gas-Pressure Springs Failing

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a 2002 Targa, which has the rear window that opens. The gas-pressure springs/shocks which hold the window up seem to be failing, and the window won't stay open.

I could buy replacement springs here (part 15):
http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...-05/811-03.php

They want to charge $253 per spring which seems insane to me. Anyone know if there's an easy way to fix this?

Here's a pic of the springs on a 997 that I found online:

I just got the part number off of mine and googles it. The number is superseded with a 997 part number. Pelican has them cheaper try this link:

It appears that 1 unit is 2 shocks but I'd clarify that beforehand.

I always liked that feature on a Targa and almost bought one. I would make sure to replace both at the same time. Great cars. Now stop complaining about the price of parts, its a Porsche.

Nope. Different part numbers for the left and right sides. That is pricey!

If you're handy in the shop, buy a matching air strut from Amazon (with the same compressed and uncompressed lengths) and graft the fittings from the old strut onto the new one. It'll take some work to do right, but struts cost about $25 each, so you can save yourself a couple hundred bucks...

Do you guys think I could use a gas spring from a Cayman? Any idea how to check if they're the same size?

Found the Cayman part number here:
http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...=98751255103#a

98751255100 gas-pressure spring (2)

Must be a bit different from the 996, there's a L and R version for 996, but 2 of the same spring on the Cayman. Anyone with a Cayman mind snapping some close-up photos of the attach points and emailing them to me, maybe get measurements too? If I can get them attached, might be worth it even if the travel length is a bit different. ($80 cayman parts vs $500 996 targa parts)

Thanks,
Chris

996 Targa vs Cayman hatches, initial thoughts is that the length looks different...

Just got a set custom made by Lift Supports Depot (google for webpage), and they work great. Only charged $18/spring vs $250/spring that Porsche was going to charge!

OEM frunk springs are much cheaper, I think $30/each or so, I'd probably go that route. I think the hatch springs are pricey because Targas are quite rare.

Thanks for the tip.

My rear Targa hatch occasionally comes down, seems to be okay some days and other days it slowly sinks so this is a good thread for me, I have just sent an e-mail to Lift Supports Depot, asking them for a price for all four lifts for my 2002 Targa plus postage to Australia.

And if there is some demand that they may include the Targa in the drop-down menus
