According to the service records that came with my car, the original clutch lasted about 60k miles (whether or not it actually needed replacement, I don't know). When the throwout bearing disintegrated on me last October (at 100k miles), I just replaced the clutch while I was in there even though it wasn't even at 50% yet.

Those of you that replaced the clutch early (IMS bearing or RMS replacement) should hang on to the old clutch as others (like me) might be willing to buy them to use in yheir cars. One person's trash is another person's treasure.

I have one in the box. You can have it, if you email me a shipping label

You and I were too far apart with time. I've ended up getting one locally. Here is a little tidd bitt. The '97 Audi A4 1.8T has the same throwout bearing as the 996 except is doesn't cost $160.....only $40.

Yes. My dealer wants 39 for an oil filter, and the EXACT same one by Mahl can be bought at Advance Auto for 10

Had IMS bearing and RMS done at 63,000 miles. Mechanic noted clutch was worn about 75% and recommended replacement since he was already there. He's a good Indy who only recommends work to do when necessary or, in this case, cost effective.
