Fresh oil and filter change today...
Decided to use something other than Mobil1 0w-40w, for the first time in my 996 ownership. Picked up 9 qts.of Castrol Edge Syntec 5w-40w, and put in a new Mann oil filter with my magnetic (thanks Jake) drain plug. My oil change interval was 12 months and exactly 4172 miles driven, and the magnetic plug hardly had anything on it. I expected more ferrous particles to be covering it. I haven't yet cut open my old Mann filter, but I will later to inspect for any debris.
I was curious and decided to track exactly how many oil and filter changes my 996 has had since inception(25 miles,5/6/99), so I pulled out all the records of services and can verify 11 oil changes, originally at 2 different dealers from new, and then some Indys and then me. With 64,500 miles on the odometer, and 11 oil changes from birth , that averages 5,863 miles between services.
Still with original internal engine parts and clutch, and $&%, and I can't tell you how I've enjoyed almost 7 years of ownership so far. I'll try and post pics of used oil filter.

Hmm.Two things:
First the Castrol is certainly a step in the right direction, next should be JG DT40.
Second, I would change oil at least every 6 months instead of once a year (JR and many experts now agree with this). Your 996 is a garage queen like mine which can be worse than DD'ing it if your waiting so long between changes.
Im sure SP agrees a well.

Depends on how you drive it between stints in the garage. If you're driving it long and hard enough to boil off the water, then there should be no issues in waiting a year. However, if you do a lot of short trips, you might want to change it more frequently.
Getting ready to do mine as well. Also will do plugs and tubes when I get a chance - have the parts on-hand.

Any chance to see your mag drain plug picture with amount of deposits? Probably too late.
I recently posted my plug with deposits and Motul 300V 10W-40 UOA in 997 forum, have a look let me know how yours compares to mine.
Cheers,

Wyovino, I always get my Porsche up to temp., no sign of moisture in oil cap. Ready to do my plugs and tubes next as well.
All of my reading points to 12 months or 5k miles on oil changes KK and so far so good.
Luxter- I didn't take a pic of my magnetic plug, but it contained very little amount of deposits.

an extra $100+ bucks per year is worth it to me knowing there's fresh fluids.

After reading so many oil posts, I thought why not try something else for a change, so I changed oil brands and viscosity to see if There might be a difference that I could detect. Other than that , someone else would need to jump in to spell out advantages if any.

My mind says so, and my engine sounds happy with fresh oil and filter. How much time are you at the track Ed? Any recent pics at speed?
