Default Roof Rack on Cabriolet hard top?

This is my first post on here so be gentle please. I just acquired a 1999 996 Cabriolet. It came with a hard top - which I have yet to try putting on. Anyway, I would like to take the car up to the snow in the winter (snow around here stays in the mountains where it belongs) and it would be terrific if a roof rack could be fitted to the hard top. Anyone know if this is possible?

Welcome to rennlist!
With the hardtop mounted and with proper winter tires, the 996 is a wonderful winter car!

About the roof rack or root transport system as Porsche likes to call it, Pelican lists it as "No Longer Available" for the 996 Cabriolet.
So I guess you'll have to hunt one down on fleabay or amazon...

Part # is 996-801-055-00-OEM

btw. please post some pics of your car.

Look at the mounting instructions and see if your car has the bolt holes to mount the RTS. There is a 996 owner in UK that posted a RTS for sale because he couldn't find the threaded mounting holes??

I have considered the same idea. I wonder if the standard coupe RTS would fit the hardtop and mount into the "seam" area. It would require some customization for sure, but the look would be great. I would like to measure the RTS and see what could be done.

The RTS for a cab is an elaborate and very expensive system designed to be able to lower the cab roof while installed. It's a completely different animal compared to the simplicity of the Coupe's.

The standard RTS will not work on a Cab. There are no holes in the hardtop like there are under covers on a coupe.

Porsche made a special rack for the Cab, but no longer makes it. I bought one last year on eBay. It mounts to the front A pillars where there are holes for it behind the weather striping, and to special mounts near the convertible flaps by the rear quarter windows. I have yet to mount mine.

Watch eBay, you will see them on occasion. I have seen them as low as $150 and also for over $500.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Really useful. the Sea Sucker is an interesting concept. Somewhere on the web I came across a guy who made a bike rack for a Lotus Elise of all things using the same concept - Suction Cups. Seems crazy but it worked for him.

Some pics of the car are below. Tomorrow she gets a new Clutch/RMS/IMS...

My thought was to add mounting points under the cab hardtop seams. I recognize that there are not existing mounts there.

My personal opinion is that the RTS for the cab is fugly...reminds me of a full roll cage on a CJ7...

Cheers,
TomF
