For a 996TT, I'd look at an LS3 (or LS7) so you would have more power out of the box and potential to make even more. A KEP engine/trans adapter and have a machinist make you some custom engine mounts (head mounted). Run a C6 LS3/LS7 water pump. There is a lot of information on LS1tech from people doing swaps on 996s & 997s.
5 grand would certainly be on the extreme low end of the conversion. After 20 ls1 swaps I have found that the little items add up to the cost of the big ticket items quickly. $50 and $100 items add up. Most all swaps I have ever done the goal was to improve the power and or the reliability of the car. I mostly use enginuity, but these endeavors aren't cheap at all.
With a turbo installing a stock ls1 would definitely be a step backwards in the power department, but the reliability and driveability would be better. At least an LS2 and better yet a twin turbo LS.
