Charles I just checked the invoice.
The only reference regarding the IMS bearing is 014002 "Kit Roulement IMS Double" which translates to "IMS Double Bearing Kit".
Rings a bell?

14002 would be a serial number for a dual row IMS Retrofit, manufactured July 2014, so it is possible that it has one of our bearings fitted, but I would have presumed they would actually put the part number fitted. If I were the customer who paid to have it installed, I would have questioned the lack of detail.

If it is kit sn# 14002, it was not registered with us, so I don't know what the condition of the original bearing was or if the job was properly qualified. Bare minimum, they should have dropped the sump which you will find sealant listed on the workorder which is a likely indicator that the sump was dropped. Usually most shops will charge several hours extra labor for these extra checks, depending on how thorough they are, and indicate cam timing deviation numbers on the workorder or other notes from the inspection, like "sump was clean."

If you don't want to publicly share the workorder, you could always PM it to me so I can look it over. I could also see if we sold a bearing to the shop that put it in, etc.

That said, it's likely not an IMS bearing noise as we've have never seen one fail in over 10 years of offering the dual row IMS Retrofit. I would first pull the filter and also sump to be sure and go from there. There are lots of things that can make this noise. I've seen catalytic converters make the same noise.

And that noise at a traffic light a mile from home (a guy knocked on the passenger window telling me my car was making some strange noise).
Any of you guys with an idea?
Someone had to "knock on your window" and tell you that your car was making that noise? Seriously? Do you have a problem with your hearing? Let me guess, you had your favorite Gwar CD cranked up to 11 ? I wouldn't start that engine again until you figure out what's going on there...

I didn't want to say it, but it was the first thought that came to mind...

And you’re right I had the radio blasting...
And for sure won’t start the car again.

I did a search and found a kit with the part number 014002:

https://cupspirit.com/roulement-arbr...le-rangee.html

It looks very much like the shielded dual row bearing kit from FVD that there was a thread about with a similar failure about a week or so ago. If not, it's a copy of their kit.

2004 C4S with 16k miles and original IMS. Purchased at 13k miles from original owner. Changed the oil twice already, once a year or 3k miles, whichever comes first. Plan to do this until clutch replacement or Indy recommends IMS replacement. So far he said it's not needed (I'm sure the board won't agree).

Was it changed annually before you got it?

I'd really re think this as an owner, you should have this car pre-qualified for a IMS Solution or at the very least a replacement ceramic bearing
Not to say it's going to fail, but to enjoy the car for years to come
In comparison, its a small amount of money in the cost of ownership to the alternative

I don't believe so. Previous owner said he changed it a few times himself (not yearly though) and the records show two changes performed by the dealer.

If I decide to keep the car (contemplating upgrade to 997 Turbo), I'll swap it out for an LN bearing at some point this year.

copy that, I bought a 26,000 mile 2004 Anniversary car in 2014
after a thousand hard miles, I decided I would keep the car long term and had the IMS changed

X51 engine is an expensive replacement

The shop owner dropped the gearbox today and confirmed a failed IMS bearing (see pics).

Installed bearing is a FVD dual row as noted on the invoice.

Question is : How can a new IMS bearing fail after 16000 km (10000 miles)?

The car had 3 oil changes, the oil filter was cut open after each change and found free of metal shavings.

There are a number of different reasons this could have happened...
