IMS bearing failure for your 996, Y or N? tell us (yr, 996 Mk1 or MK2 failure mode)

Once you pull the transmission you can see the flange. If it is a factory flange you will see one of 3 things:
1) A shallow "bowl" indicates a factory dual row.
2) A deep "bowl" with a small nut indicates the original single row that can be replaced with the motor still in the car.
3) A deep "bowl" with a large nut indicates the upgraded single row (in a 996 it means it got a replacement motor after the 997s were out) that can not be replaced without tearing down the motor.
Left is a single row flange and right is a dual:
When you start talking about the aftermarket replacements, I don't know how much you can tell from the flange.

Yes it's a very high quality copy of the factory RMS tool and $500. I'm willing to rent to help recoupe my cost on it - PM me. Also have all the LN IMS tools including the faultless. They all worked great and I have several thousand miles on my 986 fix.

What year was it installed? You still cannot tell for certain unless you see it with your own (or your mechanic's) eyes. Did they take a picture at the dealer? Since they did not offer to replace it, it is likely you have the 2006-2008 bearing. Sadly, this still fails.

Unfortunately I don't know when it was installed or at what mileage. The PO didn't even know it had a replacement engine so I found that out myself. I'm not worried about it failing, I really was just curious. I'll just check it when it's time to do the clutch.

2001 Carrera 4 Cabrio with 105k miles. Had RMS leak, decided to have LN Engineering IMS installed as well as a new clutch since my mechanic was already in there (among other things). Original bearing was still fine at 105k.

Quite the opposite. I could barely afford to change the oil last time I did it. A 911 is something I probably shouldn't own, but the kids and I are having a blast. I have a cheaper car that I can drive if death were to strike.

I know the percentage has nothing scientific behind it but it is an indication with both polls over 1000.
