I bought a 996 About a year ago that had the engine replaced due to IMS issue at 75,000 miles. New engine had LN bearing installed in it. I change the oil every 5,000 miles to reduce the chances of that issue again.

01 C4 83k no issues yet
A bit late but it would have been of interest if feed paid for services were mentioned for those contemplating a retro & not basking in bucks.

Just bought a 2002 C4S with 56K. The previous owner had the IMS upgraded when he replaced the clutch at 54K. Talked to the tech who did the work and he said the original bearing was in great shape. Let's hope the LN bearing is as good as advertised and they didn't replace a good bearing with a bad one.

So basically what I'm gathering here is that there is a lot of IMS replacement going on and it's not necessary. I do understand that it was an issue on some 3.4 earlier models, but for the most part the 3.6's are fine.

As requested I have posted this poll.
Many have been asking to understand how many of the 996 cars have had IMSB (intermediate shaft bearing) failures. Although the people on this board are not necessarily a random sampling of 996 owners many have asked to see a poll to get a better sense of it.
Please vote only once for each 996 you own (yes or no).. you can post multiple times but only vote once
Please include details of your car and engine if it failed via IMS and when.
Please let us know if there were any mitigating factors (low oil, overheat, etc) that might have led to the failure
Please post only about IMS failures, this is not about RMS failures
Please post only for your car, no heresay or posting for a friend who doesn't frequent the board
Please post what was done to rectify the failure if your car failed (CPO engine, engine out of pocket, used engine, sold, insurance fire, pushed it into a river etc)
Please ONLY POST DATA HERE. Not discussion.
Hopefully this will help owners and soon-to-be owners get a sense of how frequently this occurs.
*Thanks*

Clutch replaced at 72,000 miles. Tech inspected IMS cover and saw no signs of leakage. Asked about replacing bearing and was told the Shop refuses to get involved with IMS replacements...just doesn't do them preventively unless there is a failure...interesting!

2003 996 Carrera, 45 K. NO IMS bearing failure; the OEM was replaced with LN engineering retrofit recently, only as a prophylactic measure (the original bearing was in perfect shape).

2000 C2 Carrera Cab with 38K miles still on original IMS bearing. I didn't even know about this IMS/RMS issue when I bought the car from my brother-in-law and he replaced the clutch for me at 24K miles due to wear. Looks like dealer only replaced the clutch and nothing else. Until today underbody is still bone-dry (knocking on wood). I will continue to change oil, do oil-analysis and check oil-filter every year regardless of mileage to minimize the ISM failure. Cheers,

No IMS/RMS issues here
1999 (98) Porsche Carerra 2
48k Miles
No leaking from rear main seal
No issues with IMS bearing
I love my 911 so damn much it should be illegal, at least in Southern states.
